Culzean

Last weekend we went for a spin down to Culzean. I know I've posted dozens of pictures of Culzean before but it really is such a beautiful place that it's impossible not to post more. We spent most of the day in the walled garden which is a part of the estate I haven't visited for a while. The weather was gorgeous, the gardens were filled with families enjoying the sun and there were children splashing in the fountain. It was easy to imagine a small fair boy with eyes like summer playing by the fountain...

The bottom left picture was taken inside the beautiful walled garden vinery, which still boasts the most incredible assortment of vines. There has been a vinery at Culzean since the late 18th century though it was substantially rebuilt in the 1880s. The information board in the vinery helpfully explains:

Grapes, now so commonplace, were once regarded as a luxurious fruit. The ability of the Culzean gardeners to provide a continual supply would not only have helped to provide a rich diet for the family, but also served to flaunt the wealth and status of the Kennedy family.

Those Kennedys, always showing off... ;)
