God Is a DJ

I'm currently reading Love Is a Mix Tape: One Song at a Time by Rolling Stone editor, Rob Sheffield. I thought I'd share a part in the story where he equates his veneration for vinyl records to veneration during Mass:

"I approached my stereo sanctuary and genuflected. I lifted each vinyl wafer to the heavens. I unveiled the cassette ostentorium: 'Take this, all of you, and rock. This is the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you, and for all who rock, so that rock may be worshiped and glorified.'"

"Rock, I am not worthy to receive you. But only say the word, and I shall be healed."

It's a pretty fun book even though I'm only three chapters in. He puts a playlist of songs from the 90s at the start of every chapter--pretty clever.

Well, it's the second week of the semester and I think I've gotten used to it. I have five classes:
Adolescent Psychology
History of Guam
Educational Psychology
Audio-Visual Education
Literature, Myth, and Culture

The last class is fucking crazy. Ferris is in the class and he's playing the role of the Devil's Advocate quite well. If people didn't know he was an atheist in constant search for ideological arguments with ALL Christians, he's making it pretty obvious in this class. I don't mind him speaking his mind but I do mind that people in my class who are visibly offended by his accusations don't say anything. Ferris isn't THAT cynical, he's just trying to get a rise out of everyone. The problem is that no one is speaking out against him.

Seriously, I think I was the only one in class today making an attempt to argue with him but it all went to shit when 3 other guys in class were backing him up. Geezy, I've seen some of the people in my class at church and they couldn't say anything when Ferris said, "I like Christians but I hate Jesus." He was contradicting Ghandhi's statement about liking Christ but disliking Christians. Sigh. I talked to Ferris about it after class and called him out on his bluff. He laughed and said that I knew him too well but everyone else didn't.Then again, I don't think anyone on our little island made up of mostly Christians has ever met such a militant atheist like Ferris. Maybe they were still in shock over the encounter. Maybe next class someone will get into fisticuffs with him. I think Ferris would actually like that. Strange guy.
