Back from the races

Himself did well, completed the 10K course without any leg problems. His time was not his fastest, but since his leg is okay, who cares?

Usually during races, I have my camera and take pictures during the pre-race activity and at the start. Then I sit in the car with coffee and the morning paper and wait for the runners to come back. At a 5K, the fastest runners show up at about 16 minutes. At a 10K, they come in at about 35 minutes. The supporters all gather around and cheer everyone in as they finish. When I see Himself coming round the bend toward the tape, I break out the camera again and get more photos as he crosses the finish line. He can finish a 5K in about 30 minutes and did this week's 10K in one hour and one minute!

This week there was a change of plans, and I completed my first 10K! One of the group that Himself trains with here in Durham had signed up for the race months ago, before she had to have a hysterectomy. She's still recovering from the surgery and can't run, but wanted to walk the course. When we met them before the race, she invited me to walk with her around the lake. It was a lovely day for a walk, so I put the camera in the car and we set off at the start. I'd only met her among the group after training runs at the deli where I'd have breakfast with the running gang, but during a two hour walk together, I got a new friend as well as some exercise!

It was fun when the runners of the concurrent 30K run started coming back past us toward their finish line. We gave them all a cheer and applause, but cheered loudest when the rest of the Durham group who were in the 30K went past! Turns out one of them was the 3rd finisher among women 50-55! They list the top three, and it doesn't matter that there were only three women that age running.
