I recently had been borrowing Downton Abbey from the library, having been made curious by a teaser trailer. I'd finally seen the first and second series when I decided to bite the bullet and just buy all three series. Holy. Cow. I have a new obsession.
I'd spoiled myself silly already by the time the third series arrived, so I knew the heartbreak and tragedy that would be waiting for me in the deaths of both Sybil and Matthew. Nonetheless, I still sobbed my heart out through both of them. Watching Tom and Cora both cling to Sybil as the life drained out of her was absolutely heartbreaking.
The Christmas Special, though... I became a huge fan of Mary/Matthew throughout the first two series (seriously, watching them torture each other was nail-biting, but excellent entertainment). I did hope to see a bit more of them enjoying married life in the third series, though I certainly loved what we had. By the time of the Christmas Special, however, I kept praying that it would all end differently than what I'd read about. The scene with Mary, Matthew, and the new baby in the hospital was absolutely beautiful, and I was already crying because I knew what was coming. The car accident... yeah, I didn't stop weeping for a good ten minutes after that. I know Dan Stevens wanted to move on to other roles, and I always support an actor's choice to move on with his or her career, but still, break my heart into a million tiny pieces. Seriously.
I read that Julian Fellowes was considering writing Matthew out anyway, since he thought that there wasn't much left for Matthew to do and writing a happy couple is far more difficult and - supposedly - uninteresting from an entertainment standpoint. My take? There is so much drama in that big house with all of its inhabitants, a couple who have a lovely, happy relationship would be an excellent break from all of that. Alas, it's not to be. *sob*
Still, I am absolutely in love with the show and was thrilled that the fourth series began filming recently. Can't wait. :)
