You weren't allowed to watch the show? Aw. At least you got to catch up on it later! IDK how much of it you've seen, so I recommend at least watching Seasons 4, 5, and 8 in order. To me, those have the highest points in the series, both in dealing with characterization and comedy.
one thing you pointed out amazingly well in this fic - he's boring.
It's interesting that you got that from the fic because, while I think Ross is the most convoluted Friend and therefore most interesting for me to analyze, I agree that he was boring to Rachel. They had chemistry and desire, especially in the beginning, but one of the things that made their relationship increasingly harder for me to accept was that they had so little in common: their interests, personality types, and how they interacted whenever they were in a relationship.
I totally agree that Ross's head got in the way too much with Rachel. He'd had her built up since high school as being this perfect person, and when he was finally with her, I think he was rattled by the woman who didn't mesh with his fantasy, and that's one of the reasons why he kept acting out the way he did, which brought about all his jealousy, anger issues, and insecurity with her in S3. OTOH, Rachel always seemed just supportive of Ross's interests outside the group, but not genuinely into them. And yes, Phoebe is a much better match for Ross because she does call him out on his BS, and looking back, I think his moments with her are consistently sweet and entertaining, like the bike episode and when she consoles him about Carol in the S3 flashback ep. They had tons of chemistry in their scene, so yeah, I could definitely see them being a good fit for each other.
What you said about Joey being all heart is also so, so true. Even though he was a very simple guy, I think that was what made him be such a sweetheart to Rachel and helped him bring out the fun, likable side to her. I hadn't paid much attention to him during the show's run, just kind of pegging him as the silly goofball of the group with a one-dimensional edit, but a couple eps here and there, then his SL in Season 8 turned him into a much more layered character, and even from the beginning, there are hints about him that show there was more to him than meets the eye.
Someday (along with many other shows) I plan to own the entire series, and I'll definitely be viewing them in order. Actually I think I already started that process on Sidereel.com and I honestly don't care about plot, the show is just GOOD, and I already mostly know how it ends though I'm not sure I ever saw the full finale. So it's not going to be a problem for me like plots usually end up being in shows that I like, lol. Besides, I may as well make this headcanon, so all is well. Aside from the dead people who were lovely.
:)
All of their relationships are unique and wonderful. Rachel and Ross just didn't make sense as a couple because they could never just be happy together.
Yay! It'll be even better with the DVDs, because you get all the extra scenes that didn't make it on air. And at least you do have a good idea on how everything ends, so it's not like there'll be any huge surprises. Also, LMAO
Totally, totally agree with you; as time went on, more often than not they were miserable when they were just with each other :(
Aw guess what! My dad put on an episode of Highway to Heaven and an adorable baby-faced Matthew Perry came on and he's actually playing an adopted boy and bawww. It's so freaking adorable.
