Pets? I don't think I've ever actually owned one myself. I think the last time I had a pet around me would be over twenty years ago, before I went to university. My father had a dog a golden retriever, as I recall, a very traditional sort of dog for living in the Cumbrian hills. Living close to farms as well, I didn't need to have a pet of my own there was always animals wandering around. Dogs, cats, hell even the likes of geese and newborn lambs if you really wanted them. It wasn't a bad place to grow up, all in all.
But nowadays, with my lifestyle? Sure, I'll could have a pet, but I'd never guarantee when I'd be home to look after it, or even if I did manage to come home. My average finishing time is somewhere between 9pm and midnight. Some officers manage to have normal lives, but those on the front line? No. Pets are for people with normal 9-5 jobs, not for spooks.
