Holy Smoke

At the recommendation of my grandparents, Paula and I went to Holy Smoke Smokehouse on Ferry Road for dinner tonight. The food all sounded amazing, but I eventually went for the Salmon special (Paula had the steak). The menu listing for each dish was accompanied by a couple of wine suggestions; the special wasn't on the menu, so I picked a recommended pairing from the other salmon main. We had a smokehouse sampler platter for an appetiser: a smoked salmon (proper smoked salmon not that thin-sliced fishy nonsense), another kind of fish the name of which I forget, and a meat of some sort. It was all very good. And sizeable! I think we both left part of out mains. Suitablely stuffed, we skipped desert in favour of coffee; I had a spicey mexican hot chocolate thing which arrived deconstructed with a large block of chocolate for me to disolve in a large mug of hot milk. Not being a fan of hot milk, I was worried it might be too milky, but I needn't have been. It was chocolatey and delicious with narry a taste of the white stuff. The whole meal (starter, two mains, two wines, coffee and hot chocolate) came to around $50 each (with mains around the $30 region), and was well worth it for the price.

In brief, a little pricey but good.
