(unrelated to the above) I don't really understand this concept that women are supposed to be cattier than men. (first of all, notice how 'catty' is really an adjective that's only used to describe female personalities and behavior? "He's such a catty guy," sounds weird to me, particularly describing a guy who's not femininely flamboyant. feel free to debate this claim in the comments. native speaker intuition battle!) But as someone whose major communities of practice are almost ALL female-dominated (everything except church which is probably about an even split. I also spend the least amount of time with people from church) and have been so in one form or another for a good long time (linguistics? not very man-heavy) I just have not had very much experience corroborating this piece of 'common sense.' I mean, i've met people who are petty and spiteful, but not contained to the female half of the (data pool) that I would say 'this is primarily a female characteristic' like the grammar suggests.
