Where I've been

Apr 01, 2012 01:10

I've wanted to post about my absence for a few days now and could not find the rightwords - especially because I am not fishing for pity. I just want to explain why I haven't been writing any comments and stuff.

I've been in hospital for 7 weeks nows because I have haemolytic-uremic syndrome ("HUS"), a blood illness that makes some blood cells fall apart and kills my kidneys. I am glad to say I am at the point where I can say I survived it, but it was a very close call. Nobody knows for sure why I caught it since I have the atypical kind. There is a kind that you catch through Ecoli, but I never had anything like that. The doctors think I might have gotten it through the medication I take for my liver.

On monday I have surgery to get a tube for peritoneal dialysis which will replace my kidneys and allow me to live a relatively independent life. I will have to dialyse myself several times a day, but other than that it will give me more freedom than the regular kind of dialysis where you have to go to a dialysis centre three times a week.

If everything goes well I am back home by the end of next week and life finally goes on. It is terrible to be in hospital so long.

All my love to those of you who keep writing beautiful stories... reading fanfiction has gotten me through this long, long break of my life and given me back positivity at very bleak moments.

What can I draw from this and tell you? Please go to the doctor and get yourself checked when you feel unwell. I've been feeling cranky since November and just thought it was winter blues... I don't know if anything could have been done but I keep asking myself. I am glad I survived, but I keep wondering if there had been any way to save my kidneys.

Keep writing and look after yourself <3
