Captions...or not

Well...great.

In 8 days, our new roomie arrives.

Tonight I pointed out that our TV (which I bought in the Fall of 1992 because Zenith had begun putting caption chips into TVs in the US before the mandatory start date for inclusion in all sets with screens 13" or larger) has shown total failure of its caption chip. The captions were patchy, dodgy, unpredictable for a while. Now they've not shown up in ages...and even the button to see if they're set to "on" doesn't work (on remote OR set).

This is...bad.

So I suggested that we bring up the (HUGE) backup TV that we got for $25 at a yard sale that has been waiting for the inevitable death of my 15-year-old Zenith.

This was GREAT...until Husband was dusting it and noticed that it was manufactured in 1991. This was, of course, AFTER he lugged the ginormous thing up from the basement alone.

So...just in case RCA was ahead of the curve, we plugged it in and checked the available settings--brightness, channel, mode, tint...no captions.

So we now have TWO TV sets in the front room. Both large, both attractive, both with VERY nice picture. BOTH with no captions. So...no problem with DVDs. But...broadcast or video? No. Captions.

Yeah.
