Lunch Meeting

“Hi, sorry I’m late,” said Kara, when she had made it through the rush of lunch crowd pedestrian traffic to the overhang of the department store. “What’s wrong? Is Clark okay?”

Lois smiled. “He’s fine, nothing’s wrong. I didn’t mean to make you worry - I didn’t realize how cryptic it sounded.”

“Uh, Can we meet? Awning, sixth and market, twelve-thirty?” Kara recited. “Yeah, that was a little cryptic.”

“Sorry, I was typing in a hurry. I’m only in National City for one day and I wanted to be sure I’d be able to see you.”

“I’m always glad to see you, Lois,” said Kara. “But I understand if you’re busy. Who knows better than another reporter, right?”

“I know,” said Lois. “But it’s important that I make the time. We’re… Well, there’s nothing official yet - in fact, Clark and I haven’t even discussed it - but if things are going the way I think they’re going - the way I hope they’re going - then you and I are going to be family.”

Kara grinned. “I would love that. And I’d love to have lunch with you, any time you’re in town. How long do you have today?”

“Only about twenty minutes,” said Lois, apologetically. “I have a few more interviews to squeeze in this afternoon, then I’ve got to catch the train back to Metropolis.”

“The train? Why?”

“I’m already over my travel budget for this month, so there’s no way Perry will let me expense a cab or a hotel room.”

“Well, maybe you don’t need either. You should stay with me.”

“Oh, no, Kara, I couldn’t-”

“Of course you can,” the blonde insisted. “I’ll tell Alex to come over for dinner, we’ll make a real girls’ night out of it, and we’ll have you on the train first thing tomorrow morning.”

“I really should say no,” said Lois. “But I was not looking forward to being rushed all afternoon. Are you really sure?”

“My couch is all yours. And if you agree now, we can use the whole-” she glanced at her watch “-forty-two minutes of my lunch break to catch up.”

Lois smiled. “Sounds like a plan.”

“Great. Because I know the perfect place…”
