Fire Extinguishers
Nate didn’t realize there was someone else in the galley until he accidentally kicked an empty beer bottle and watched it roll to a stop beside a pair of boots sticking out from a corner alcove.
“Mick?” he said, surprised.
“Yeah. That’ m’name.”
Nate frowned. “Gideon, how much has he had to drink?”
“Nothing approaching dangerous levels,” the AI replied. “But certainly more than is wise, even for someone with Mr. Rory’s impressive tolerance.”
“Didn’ ask for advice,” slurred Mick. “Asked for beer.”
“You’re getting drunk on purpose?” Nate began sorting the bottles, trying to slide the still-full ones off to the side, but Mick snagged one of his hand.
“Man’s gotta right to drink.”
“Sure,” said Nate. “And you drink all the time. But you’re never drunk. What gives?”
For a long moment, Mick just glared at him. Then, he blurted, “Haircut doesn’t trust me.”
“That’s…” Nate blinked. “Haircut - Ray - probably trusts you more than anyone on this ship. And we all trust you,” he added, quickly.
“Not ‘nymore,” said Mick, then more darkly, “Fire extinguishers.”
“Fire extinguishers?”
“He’s puttin’ ‘em all over the damn ship,” said Mick. “An’ three in his lab. Just ‘cause I set that little fire, on acciden’.”
“Now, that’s not-” Nate began, but broke off as the galley doors opened.
Mick pulled his feet out of sight, hugging his knees to his chest with the hand that wasn’t holding his beer. “If that’s Haircut, I don’t wanna talk.”
“Okay,” said Nate.
He stood, carrying two of the empty bottles and heading for the recycling chute.
“Hi,” said Ray, who had just came in, and nodded at the bottles. “Is Mick here?”
Nate tipped the bottles down the chute. “Must have just missed him.”
“Darn,” said Ray. “Do you know where he is? There’s something I really want to show him.”
“That project you’ve been working on?”
“Wow, word really does travel fast around here,” Ray said. “But, yes. I just finished installing fire extinguishers in every single compartment of the Waverider, including the jump ship, and I wanted to be sure Mick knew where they all were.”
Nate paused. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“What?” said Ray. “Why wouldn’t it be? Those extinguishers are for Mick. I mean, I know fire is his thing, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be careful.”
“So the accident in your lab?” Nate asked, gently.
“Mick could have really been hurt!” said Ray. “I never realized how many flammable things I leave lying around until I knocked into Mick and made him drop his lighter. If I hadn’t happened to be using a water-coolant for one of my experiments, I would never have been able to put his jacket out quickly, and those burns could have been really serious.”
“Then the three extinguishers in your lab?”
“I’m not taking any chances,” the scientist explained. “And I’m hoping Mick will feel safe enough in there now to hang out with me again. I miss having him around.”
“You do?”
“Mick!” said Ray, startled. “Have you been there the whole time?”
“Yeah,” said Mick, standing, then added, “Might be a little drunk.”
“What? Why?”
“Fire extinguishers,” said Mick.
Ray pouted. “They were supposed to be a surprise.”
“But you made ‘em for me,” said Mick. “So I wouldn’ get hurt.”
“I wanted you to feel comfortable anywhere on the ship.”
“Especially in your lab?”
“Well, if you like,” said Ray, the tips of his ears turning pink. “I don’t mind the company.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” said Ray. “I also had a very long conversation with Gideon about accidental verses planned fires, which was very-”
“Haircut,” interrupted Mick.
“Yes?”
“I’m gonna kiss you now.”
Ray’s ears went pinker. “Okay.”
And Nate took that as his cue to leave.
