Newsflash!
Here's my revelation of the day: people in fic can act like adults without it detracting from the overall integrity of the story.
Now, this may not seem like that much of a revelation, but whilst reading a recent SPN J2 BB story, I realized it's not something I see often in longer fics. There are plenty of short fics in which the boys act mature, probably because in short form, authors do not need to yield to the more common tropes of fandom: unjustified jealousy, roller coaster relationships, and more over-the-top misunderstandings than you can shake a stick at.
I completely understand why many authors resort to these devices and often enjoy stories despite it, but sometimes it's nice to read something where an adult can relate to the actions and motivations of the characters. Sometimes I get tired of thinking "Why don't they just talking to each other?".
It's even more understandable when one considers the fandom response, which, while positive, was less than stellar (based on nonnie reactions at the anon comm, not the fantastic comments). In my own view, I can see myself rereading this when the childish antics in other stories start to wear me down and cause me to start losing faith in humanity.
The fic I'm talking about was recced here for the first BB post at sawedoff_recs. I cannot recommend it highly enough for those who need a little adult interaction with their porn and plot.
