i got a call monday night from a saša (a baha'i in the community), asking me if i could show a visiting baha'i around ljubljana. seeing as my plans for tuesday were to meet kiki in town for a drink, and not much else, i said sure. i met saša's visitor, an older persian baha'i from new york named noushin (or something like that). she was in ljubljana only for tuesday and perhaps wednesday, or perhaps even til thursday. being a rather well established new york architect who had retired gave her the flexability to travel on a whim. she was in town to visit with saša, and to see if she could connect with an editor of a slovene architecture magazine. wish i had the budget to randomly decide to make a cross europe trip...
anyhow, we met tuesday morning, as the snow fell all around the city. something i've grown used to, more or less. i was a little irritated with the falling snow, as it ment that i couldn't ride my bike for a few days, but showing noushin around made the riding of the bus easier to deal with. we met kiki at cutty sark (best pub in ljubljana. feels like home, it does.) from there, we met up with maršn whilst on her lunch break, and went to look around the city a bit, seeing various areas designed by a famous slovene architect, jože plečnik. it was interesting to think about things that i pass almost everyday as special peices of architecture. they're really wonderful to look at, and they're really quite neat in their construction, but they're things that are there. all the time. there was a different feeling this time, however, of looking at the three bridges, or the market arcade.
during the sight-seeing tour with noushin, she invited us all to saša and tomaž's place for dinner. it was kind of odd, being invited to saša and tomaž's, without them being the inviters. add to that, knowing that it was the night of their wedding anniversary. we tried to politely decline, but persians have a way about them that makes it very hard to refuse an invitation. i ended up at dinner. it was made much easier when saša called me to find out where we were, and proceeded to invite me as well. dinner was nice, as noushin made it, and persian food is always a nice treat.
after that, we made plans to meet in town again on wednesday, to see a bit more of the city under snow, as well as to get noushin to meet her editor friend. it was very interesting spending so much time with someone who was so much wealthier than i. it was a glimps into a world where money is really quite trivial. however, she never made us feel like we were beneath her. she was so enthusiastic to know each of us, kiki, maršn and i, and to know past our exteriors. i was quite the center of amuzement for her, considering the presence of my kilt. and then, when she noticed the tattoo, she was really suprized. she said that she had developed a small prejudice towards people with tattoos, and was so amazed to meet a young person who completely dashed her prejudices against the rocks. it was fun.
