to you, I’ll only give it to you (but only if you’re there)

oh, I could listen to that theme song by The Insects over and over again. It gets me in the same way that the Doctor Who theme does - it must be something to do with the unashamed artificialness of it all, the screeching synths just tear at something visceral in me. Unfortunately the closest thing I own to other music like that is My Dying Bride’s 34.788% Complete - there are a couple of songs on it, particularly the first minute and a half or so of The Whore, the Cook and the Mother which are just grindingly good, and then there’s a point about five minutes into the song (don’t you just love epic metal?) where everything gets pared back, stripped away, and there’s only this repetitive guitar echoing away in the background while Mr Stainthorpe coughs and splutters his way through a lost in translation, then the guitar (piano?) slowly, slowly builds in intensity in the background, so softly you can barely tell, still the same repetition, but it gets slightly higher in pitch, slightly louder, slightly more unsettling... and then the drums take over and it explodes again in a revision of the beginning. MmmMmm. So good. And then The Stance of Evander Sinque starts, distorted bass and then the wall of crunchy guitar sound (which I love so much, god) starts with the riff from hell and the drums pat away and Aaron starts moaning and cursing and panting like some nymph getting ravished by Zeus and then those ridiculous trembling synths waver and implode in the background, and it’s so painful and beautiful and

so, was it as good as it used to be? Tony has lost part of his brain, as if he wasn’t crazy enough already, but the first glimpse of him, trundling along with his shambley gait and oversized jacket and that ludicrous plastic bag which contains his whole life either banging against his leg like a kid with his schoolbag who really wants to be doing something else, or clutched to his chest like it’s the holiest of relics - just, oh, I swear my heart stopped for a moment. I didn’t realise how badly I was suffering Wire in the Blood withdrawals. Maybe I should start reading the books to hold me out between seasons (please let there be another season!) My aunt was telling me last week that Carol and Tony actually get together in the books - which is even more incentive to pick them up. But then she started getting cryptic about horrible things happening to Carol... speaking of which, I really miss her in the show, though I think they dealt with her sudden disappearance fairly well. Shocking as it was, I think it was fairly in character for her to leave without telling Tony - I mean, where would you even start? She was probably worried that he wouldn’t even notice she was gone. But if he’d been in hospital, surely she’d have been more concerned about him... anyway, Alex seems like she might work out. I was (understandably?) iffy about her to begin with, but the dismissiveness with which she dealt was Tony was rather amusing - his dogged bewilderment was so so charming. I had thought for a moment that she was living with a girlfriend, which was annoying only because the frisson of UST between Carol and Tony was such a good element in the old shows, but it was just her son, so that’s that taken care of. Tony and Carol had such a crackling, restrained, underplayed tension going on between them though - and I think that’s going to be hard to equal (though I can see how they’re trying to do it in next week’s ep - here’s hoping it doesn’t feel hackneyed) Though I was enjoying the show the moment that won me over to Alex’s side was when they had the killer secretary in custody and she and Tony did that sweet little reprise of Carol and Tony’s interrogation technique - Carol was always kind of shadowed by Tony though, this Alex has nails - when she knocked the killer out, whoo, yep - that was cool. I don’t know why Carol left, but seeing as how Tony has undergone something of a regeneration, I suppose they might might have thought it was time for him to have a new companion - all he needs now is a little tin dog and a red Jeep Cherokee and this will be the best season ever.
