I just want to say that I watched "Dune" and "Don't look up", and I guess they were both... okay? I wouldn't even mention them, but they were nominated for Oscars, so I expected more than okay. "Dune" looks really, really good, and I loved the desert, ships, clothes, colours and shots, but I can't say I was fully engaged with the story. The world was interesting and I'd like to know more about it, it's the characters that felt typical and predictable. I really hoped there would be a twist about the identity of "the One" or who gets to die. And I'm not sure if the music fit the image.
"Don't look up", on the other hand, was described as visionary, controversial, eye opening, bitter, nihilic and pesymistic, and - here comes a spoiler - it[Spoiler (click to open)]just meant that there was no happy end? That after being told for two hours that they're all going to die, they actually die and that's shocking? The story wasn't scary. It didn't reveal any hidden truth. It didn't leave me scared that something like that could happen in the real world and we're all doomed. You know what scared me? "Years and years" and - here comes another spoiler - [Spoiler (click to open)]it doesn't even end with the world's destruction. So while it had some good ideas and some good scenes, I wouldn't call it an Oscar movie. And seriously, I know it's an American movie, but am I supposed to believe that when the world found out that a huge comet is coming towards Earth, everyone just sat back and let the US do whatever they want with it?
I also watched "Tick tick... Boom" and I'm surprised it is NOT nominated for the best picture. THAT was engaging. But I know almost nothing about movies. And, by coincidence, my 30th birthday is in a few days, so it might have made a difference.
