I haven't updated in an eternity. And, since I'm currently on my lunch break, and in need of something brainless, I thought now would be a fine time.
I'm moved into my apartment. Its fantastic. I love the place. Its not nearly as "nice" as my apartment in Bigelow, but its so much more home-y. In Bigelow, I always felt kind of like a guest. It was like I was staying in a hotel or something. My new place (though wayyyyyyy more spacious) is alot more run-down. But I like that. I like that the floor in the "dining room" slopes. I like the ancient gas stove, and the hutch that's built right into the wall, and has the shell of a dumb-waiter built into the back. I like the 1940s radiators. This place has so much more character.
Currently, its severely lacking in furniture, because Jason (my roomate) had nothing besides his office and bedroom furniture when we moved in. Whatever we have is what I brought from my one room studio, and obviously it looks like nothing in my new 6 room place. So, I've bought some necessaries at IKEA and the Salvation Army, but we still need alot. Slowly but surely.
And the roomate himself is pretty good too. I mean, there are some really minor things about him that irritate me, and i'm sure the same is true for him, but in general, he's a really nice guy, and a decent roomate. He's certainly much better than living with anyone in my family. This summer was a good reminder of how unbearable that can get.
School is great. Started 8 days ago. I love it here. I like it alot more than I thought I would. These kids are a stark contrast to my bloomfield kids. The personality is completely different. But they are super sweet, and intelligent, and way better behaved. The people I work with are all cool too. There's Robyn, the 40-something wasp-y mom whose daughter is actually in 6th grade at the school. She does yoga, and drinks red wine, and tries hard to stay youthful. Very funny, in an uppity, joan-crawford sort of way. Kristine is my best school buddy, so far. She teaches the same thing as I do, on the other team. We collaborate really well together, and we get along astonishingly well. She's 23 and married. Then, there's Joe, the musician who teaches English. I don't know him extremely well yet, but he's definitely my kind of people. Lives in Providence, hangs out at Coffee Exchange. He was even going to come to the brother kite show with me last week, but couldn't make it because of his own band practice (and the tbk show running insanely late for a school night). But, he made me promise to keep him posted about future shows, because he wants to see them.
All in all, school is great. And man....do i LOVE teaching English. Its so much more fun.
Socially, things are going well too. Its SO nice to be back in RI. To get to go to events that I used to have to miss when I was in CT. Last night was Matt's birthday at the Wick Pub...and the whole crew was there. The best part was that I walked there and back, because I live so close now. I LOVE LOVE LOVE living on the East Side. Its SO my place. I love that I can walk to just about anything I need. I love that so many of my friends live close by. I love that there is always something to do or at least somewhere to go (hell, its nice just to have a choice of 3-5 coffee shops within 1 mile, rather than always having to go to starbucks). I love being close to my family, but far enough away to have an excuse not to be over there all the time. I love that when I'm feeling bored or lonely, I can call Matt and say "come over and watch Lost" or go for a drink with a friend. Or, at the very least, have a roomate to talk to. Its such a nice change.
I'm having my housewarming party this Saturday. Its looking like its going to be a fun time. I made it a joint housewarming for me/birthday party for Mark & Matt, since it falls squarely in the middle of their two days. I had sent out an evite, and only about 10 people responded. But then, last night at the Pub, just about everyone there was like "i didn't respond to your evite, but i'm definitely coming." So, I think the count is up to almost 20, if not more. And, the best part is, people seem to be excited about it. Not just like, "oh, yeah, I'll go" as an obligatory thing. People are genuinely looking forward to it. Even better, the majority seems pretty jazzed about the dress-up theme, which I think will prove to be alot of fun.
Life is generally great right now. That makes me happy.
