once i take my final praxis, i am applying to some k-5 schools in prince william county, virginia. they just published an article in their newspaper TODAY about starting salaries for teachers in the county being over 40K. not bad at all for a teaching job... nearly double what i'd make in the midwest IF i was even so lucky to find a job. they did a report on the news last night that the worst place anywhere to find a job is in the midwest. all the jobs are in florida and along the east coast or texas. i've spent a good few hours researching the schools in the area and have narrowed it down the ones i really find appealing. there's one in particular that has over 1100 elementary students in the facility, it was build in 2001, and they are looking to hire tons of teachers. plus, the average years of experience teachers have at the school are 6; thus, it's going to have a good, young vibe there. which, hopefully, would support my "out of the box" and DEFINITELY UNTRADITIONAL method of teaching.
they are hiring, according to some article, 5,000 new teachers in that and surrounding areas. i think i had my numbers wrong before. plus, my degree does transfer there. i spoke to a girl who i am working with at camp this summer... she also graduates in december, has a job set up in virginia, and the only thing is she has to pass an exam out east to qualify as a teacher. it's about an hour (if even) drive to my family in maryland. plus, the living costs aren't as high as i was afraid they'd be. some nice-sized apartments with good amenities near the school are about 860 a month, which is definitely affordable if my starting salary is over 40K.
now i don't know how to break it to my friend. she's very set on cali... but i'm becoming increasingly dead set on the east coast. i mean, i'm not teaching for the money, but if i can be in an area near my family, it's a beautiful/historic place, not in the middle of nowhere but not in an overpopulated city, and the schools stats are outstanding, i am sold. the 15K more than i'd make teaching in this area is a nice bonus.
