He had brown hair that he squished under a hat, and large round brown eyes that seemed to want desperately to fade to a coppery yellow. He was pale, and terribly thin. But something about him always had Sirius watching, pausing only a second to catch a glimpse of the man as he laboured behind the counter. He always wore a white apron, and a grey shirt that usually had floury handprints decorating it, from hands touching the cotton. Sirius had no idea what pants he wore; he’d never seen him out from behind his counter.
Sirius would watch the man for just that one moment and then continue on his way, returning to a small apartment that kept his rent low and his bank balance high.
It was a cold January evening when Sirius finally went into the shop only a few minutes before closing. After a rancorous New Year Sirius had found himself with a resolution to talk to the man behind the counter in the bakery. The little bells attached to the door rang as he stepped inside. The air inside of the small shop was warm and inviting, it smelled like bread and warm cookies. Sirius took a deep breath.

The meals at Hogwarts could sometimes become a little noisy and he liked the break in his routine. Tonight Remus had cooked a pasta sauce with mushrooms and a hint of red wine. The wine itself was something he sometimes missed. They had talked about their work, the summer coming up and whether they should go somewhere together - all the other usual things. He had felt sated.
Standing here now, he wasn’t sure if he should be horrified by Remus’ audacity or impressed by the cunning and courage it would have taken to slip him a potion, any potion, let alone one with the effects that this one would have on him. But then, maybe it was already working and that was why he wasn’t as angry as he thought he should be.

A week before, he’d been with James at the Order’s headquarters when news came that a team of Aurors had been caught in a duel with some particularly nasty Death Eaters. It was Sirius’s team. News that one Auror had been killed brought Remus to panic. James had been nervous, too, but Remus, normally so controlled, had broken down. When a tired but unharmed Sirius stepped into Headquarters, the look of relief on Remus’s face was a telltale sign for someone as bright as James. The next morning he’d cornered Remus and drawn out the truth - there was more than brotherly love in Moony’s feelings for Sirius.
This was the reason he’d decided not to go to the party. He was sure James would look at him pityingly when Sirius shoved his tongue down his girlfriend’s throat at the strike of midnight. Remus John Lupin didn’t want anyone’s pity. He’d mentioned to James the reason he wouldn’t be going to the party, but had sworn him to secrecy. He’d made James promise that nobody would know, not even Lily, who was bound to unleash her fury on Sirius for being ‘an insensitive berk’. And Sirius, although quite used to being called a berk by her, might still demand to know what he’d done that time. And that would be disastrous, as far as Remus was concerned.
