Avatar: The Last Airbender -- Fancasting.

Oct 16, 2009 16:30

So, this is probably the one and only post I'm ever going to make about Avatar and the movie that is NOT happening (yes, I'm retreating into my very happy denial bubble, for not mentioning that I am in no way, shape or form EVER going to see that movie).

I was one of those who was happy when the Avatar movie was first announced. That has obviously changed, and I doubt it'll ever go back into being excited. So, here it is, just for the sake of, I don't know, Impossible Dreams, how I pictured the cast.

WARNING: I am aware that most of these actors are probably now into their twenties and thus it would have been hard - for not saying impossible - for them to actually play really young teenagers. I'm also using pictures of some people who are models rather than actors. It's mostly meant to be a physical representation that a proper casting director shouldn't have had troubles with.

I REPEAT. I know that most of these actors/models/singers I've chosen probably do not fit the correct age range. I am not well versed in child - nor teenage - actors. If you have suggestions, I'd be more than happy to listen to them. Also, I didn't cast Aang b-because actually, the one who is going to be Aang in the actual movie is probably the one choice I didn't headdesk at.

Sonam Kapoor as Katara.

The moment I thought Live Action Katara I thought of Aishwara Rai. She obviously doesn't work due to, you know, already being an adult actress and all, but I knew that I had to search for an Indian actress. And this girl? YEAH. Fits to a T.

Dev Patel as Sokka.

I admit right here that I don't know this kid at all, but look at his face! At his expression! His ears! Totally Sokka.

Jun Matsumoto as Zuko.

I AM NOT, I REPEAT, I AM NOT A JE FAN, SO I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS MAN SING, NOR ACT. That said? The pictures I saw of him and the icons totally reminded me of Zuko. He seems kind of bitchy and dramaqueenish and bitterly emo in that way Zuko was in seasons 1 and 2.

I REPEAT, I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS MAN SING NOR ACT. I'm basing this opinion solely on pictures and icons.

Mika Nadashima as Azula.

Once again, I don't know her at all, but look at that smirk! Look at the smugness! That, right there, is totally Azula in my book.

Brenda Song as Ty Lee.

Can we say cute and genki? Brenda Song fits absolutely fits with the general Ty Lee idea. Chirpy, optimitic, cute as a button, and if I'm to believe that Disney movie she did where she's Chinese-American Buffy, girl has some moves.

George Takei as Iroh:

So, George Takei does not completely fit my mental picture of Iroh. On the other hand, his expressions TOTALLY do fit with my mental picture of Iroh. Also, I'm having a blast picturing him giving Zuko his advice.

Characters I still definitely have to cast:

Toph: Finding a kickass Korean-or-Vietnamese loli is proving itself harder than I thought it would. I mean, I've found a lot of cute ones, but, you know. Not kickass material, from the photos I've seen.
Suki: A pacific islander, possibly? Yeah.
Avatar Roku: He should be slightly easier to find. Maybe.
Bumi: Heeee's going to be harder to find.
Mai: I'm having some troubles finding just the proper girl. Lots of pretty girls, but just not Mai-ish enough.

me: frustrated casting director wannabe
