Egads! A project!

I am working on a hand-written and illuminated book. It is going to be a book that instructs on the virtues and vices of man, using mostly fables, and will also have some other things in it, like the fealty oath of the Midrealm, etc. The intention is something like a book that a knight or scholar might carry around, but with a little more modern or SCA-oriented stuff in it.

If you have something that you think would go in a book like that, even from cultures other than Christianity, I would be delighted to hear abou them!

Anybody got any SHORT stories that emphasize scholarship that sound at least vaguely medieval? I haven't found any yet... Stories from mythology, fableries or compilations are okay!

The format is 6x9", written in a blackletter and illuminated mostly in the style of 14 c French, although it won't be completely period. This book is for myself, and I might decide to copy it with modifications for certain people, at my discretion, using more or less period materials and methods depending.

I am currently doing text, until I learn to leaf, because I would like to leaf this book and you can't leaf after you paint (the gold leaf sticks to the size in the paint).

I had always liked the idea of the book curses that are found at the front of some secular books in period, but I didn't want to steal one from an existing source, as they were commonly made upo by the scribe that created the books. So I made one up - here it is. Tell me what y'all think, but I can't change it, and please credit me if you use it anywhere.

To those that borrow this book and do not return it;
May your hands always shake with a palsy,
and may your food forever turn to dust in your mouth.
To those that would disrespect this text,
or handle it with dirty fingers,
May your home always be filled with vermin
and may you have a great thirst that is never quenched.
May your ears always be filled with foul oaths
and may children spit at your feet.
To those who would steal this book,
a pox will strike you,
so that your body will become a mass of oozing wounds.
Your clothes will rot from your body,
your ankles will turn sideways
and your knees will only bend backwards.
May you never find rest or sanctuary,
so that the rest of your days will
resemble the fiery Hell you will suffer in forever after.
