This weekend was Havoc in Hastings. Overall, I had a good time, though a cloud hung over the event - a friend of mine was nearly killed in an incident involving the failure of both of the brake lines on his truck as he was pulling a trailer, and then another friend of mine's father was killed on Saturday night in yet another car wreck. I haven't heard anything back yet from her.
I arrived Friday afternoon, and set up. Overall, the whole event was lazy, as camping events are wont to be. Saturday the event was part demo, and there were mundanes everywhere, asking questions and watching. I took some time to answer any questions that they had, which pretty much consisted of "What the heck are you doing hitting that guy with that sword?"
Saturday and Sunday both I taught Wire Weaving. That was actually not too bad a class to teach, there was some healthy interest and the people were excited to learn, and it takes just about an hour for them to get it.
Saturday I also fenced in Ian's tourney, and did lots of learning from Lucien. Sunday I authorized in Case and Non-Rigid, but had to run and teach my class, so that when I returned everyone was done fencing and there wasn't time for my last authorization, Dagger. I REALLY have to work on my calibration - over the long lull I have become a much harder hitter. Oh, well, practice, practice, practice. Now that it's cooling down a bit I should actually be able to make practice regularly. I'll probably be able to get in my last auth at Squire's Revolt on the 23rd. So now I have to fill out that MIT paperwork. That's kinda scary to me.
I didn't do much drinking, though I sat around Sunday night and sang filthy songs. Saturday I went out and did some ME dancing, and that was pretty fun. Sunday I spent a little time during the potluck feast and after getting to know
panzygmunt and his Lady Mattie.
Monday morning was spent actually talking to some of the local people, and introducing myself around. I got an invitation to a birthday party, which is a step in the right direction toward getting to know the SCAfolk around here.
