“I haven’t been that tired in so long,” Desmond muttered, flopping down on the bed he shared with Everett.

“I’m sorry,” Everett said, sitting down beside him.

Desmond smiled. “Oh, it’s not a bad sort of tired. I’m just...not quite used to my new body yet,” he said.

Everett frowned, and Desmond looked at him, frowning also. He reached out and brushed his fingers against Everett’s cheek. “You still feel guilty over my transformation, don’t you?” he said.

“A little bit,” Everett admitted. He avoided looking into Desmond’s eyes.

“You really don’t have to worry about it, alright?” Desmond said. He grasped Everett’s hand between his own and smiled at his husband.

“But you risked your life to save me, and -- and lost your humanity for it,” he said. “I can’t even imagine the scope of that kind of fall.”

Desmond kept his grip on Everett. “I know you think it was quite a fall for me to go from human to summon, but it wasn’t a fall. Not to me. Not when it meant I could save you, could still be with you,” he said.

“But...” Everett trailed off.

“But nothing.” Desmond shook his head. “We’re true equals now, legally as well as emotionally. So what if I’m a magical servant, instead of a lord? It doesn’t bother me.”

Everett’s eyes shined with indefinable emotion. He said nothing, though his mouth gave off just a hint of a smile.

Something occurred to Desmond. “Besides, now we don’t have to worry about what happens when I grow old and you don’t,” he said. His breath hitched in his throat when he thought about how he would have left Everett all alone if he had remained human.

“I just...” Everett sighed, his whole body seeming to deflate. Even his golden wings drooped. “...keep waiting for you to get angry and upset. To -- to panic. Most people would, in your situation.”

Desmond laughed, a quiet, soft sound. His own forest green wings fluttered, as if to punctuate his point. “I’m not most people. To tell the truth, I kept thinking I would have to panic eventually, but...there’s really no reason for me to,” he murmured.

The more Desmond thought about his situation, the more he realized that panicking made no sense for him. Being transferred to a summon’s body had provided a solution to problems he knew he and Everett would have had to face. If Desmond had stayed human, he would have aged and died, leaving the effectively immortal Everett without his beloved husband.

“I -- I suppose there isn’t. I...know you love me, know you would do anything to be with me. I just -- can’t believe my good fortune, sometimes,” Everett said. His hint of a smile grew the tiniest bit wider.

“If you can’t always believe it, I suppose I’ll just have to remind you,” Desmond said. Still keeping his grip on the other’s hand, he leaned forward and kissed Everett.

His husband returned the kiss. Then, Desmond let go of Everett’s hand and wrapped his arms around the other summon. He felt his beloved’s wings flutter as he embraced Everett, who embraced him as well. The two kept up the kiss, lips playing against each other. Desmond felt tension melt away from his husband. He pulled Everett closer to him, enjoying the feel of the other’s body.

After many sweet moments, Desmond pulled away enough to look his beloved in the eye. “Would I kiss you like that if I didn’t love you?” he said.

Everett shook his head, a genuine smile on his face. “No -- you wouldn’t,” he said.

“Do you feel better now?” he asked.

“I do.”

Desmond yawned and released his husband. “I really am tired, so I think I’m going to go make myself some ginger tea and try to sleep. Do you want anything?” he murmured, getting up from the bed.

“No, I’m alright,” Everett said. He reached out for Desmond’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “Thank you.”

“Anything for you,” Desmond said.
