It was a bad dream to Olivia, but this dream was as real as it got. All she wanted to do was wake up from this nightmare and live a life that was less painful. She questioned if what she was going through now was punishment for her past indiscretions or if it was all because of that pivotal moment eight years ago.

Watching everyone she loved leave her seemed to be a constant thing in her life and it was sending her to the edge. The first time was her mother, but her departure from this life left her unaffected, which was so different from the time Krista left San Cristobel for Springfield. Next to leave her would be their father, followed by her sister Marissa, Sam, then Krista again…and finally, Ava.

Out of everyone in her family that left her, Krista’s absence was one of things that hurt her most. Pushing Krista to leave back then ripped her apart; her sister was the only person left who actually knew who she was and stayed with her through everything, but it was for Krista’s own good. It broke her heart to send her sister away, and from then on, every person who left her chipped it off piece by piece, until there was barely anything left.

There were times-most of the time, actually-when she fought back to keep those she loved from leaving, but with Natalia she had remained silent and watched, waiting for her to be just one of the many people who abandoned her. Here she was, watching someone she loved walk away from her, yet again. It felt like a joke to her now. She started to count within the past week how many times Krista had literally walked away from her and it would have been funny for it not being painful.

Maybe I’m not supposed to care anymore, Olivia thought as she watched Rafe disappear behind the barn. She wanted to be the one chasing after Krista, not him, it only made sense. Taking care of Krista from a distance seemed to be the only way that she could take of that woman, but she wanted it to stop. They had ended up back where they started, in the same town, still not being able to share their problems with each other. She hated not knowing if Krista was really okay, but if she thought about it she had somehow coped for eight years hoping that her little sister was okay. Loving from afar, what the hell is this? Never thought it’d be me, that’s for sure.

“She’ll be okay, Olivia.” The quiet whisper in her ear and the hand on her back did little to comfort her. She wanted - needed - more than words to convince her that Krista would be okay. Seeing her sister smiling and hearing her say that everything was okay, that everything would be better, that would convince her.

“What if she isn’t, Natalia? What then?” The question came out stern, but the fear was there. She bowed her head and gripped the edge of the counter until her knuckles turned white; being so close but so far was so tough to fathom.

“Krista will pull through, Olivia,” the answer sounded so sure. Natalia was so sure, but Olivia still refused to believe it. It was an empty promise and it belonged with all the lies that she’d been told. Broken promises and shattered dreams, no one ever really chose her. No one ever stays, her mind echoed, making her feel worse.

“How would you know that, Natalia? For every moment she was hurt, I was there holding her until I knew she was okay,” Olivia snapped. “Tell me how youwould know all about my sister,” She spun around abruptly and faced her best friend who became the woman she loved more than she ever thought possible. She saw the slightly hurt, but resolute, look in those beautiful brown eyes.

Natalia appeared less than surprised that she was being snapped at, like she knew how Olivia would react. She watched as Natalia stepped closer, reached for her hands and held them tightly.

“Because,” Natalia whispered with a small smile. She clasped Olivia’s hands between hers and held them against her chest, forcing the other woman to look at her. “Because that woman out there is not the same girl you took care of years ago. She’s not a child anymore, Olivia.” She saw the hesitation on Olivia’s face, but ignored it as she pressed a light kiss on the woman’s fingertips. “And she is a Spencer; you Spencer women are strong so she will get through it. Have faith in your sister.”

“I miss her, Natalia, and I don’t want to lose her again,” Olivia breathed as tears started to roll down her face. She closed her eyes when she felt Natalia reach out and brush the tears away from her face, but she opened them briefly when she could feel the other woman’s warm breath against her lips.

“You won’t lose her.”

The words brushed along her lips before they were replaced by Natalia’s mouth. She could feel the confidence Natalia had and it made her whimper. The kiss was chaste. It ended as soon as it started. “I promise, Olivia, you won’t lose your sister.”

The drive back to the Beacon nearly killed Olivia since Krista and Rafe never came back. She was worried that something happened to them, but Natalia reassured her that they would be fine. God, Krista... Olivia tightened her grip on the steering wheel in front of her. The only reason she left the farmhouse was because of Emma; Jane had her for way too long and who knows where the child might be in that woman’s grasp, or lack of.

Olivia parked her car and entered through the service door, using the side service elevator to get up to her suite. She made sure she was composed before she slipped her key in the door. As soon as the green light appeared, Olivia opened the door and walked inside. She saw Jane sitting beside the desk helping Emma with what looked like the last of her homework. It brought a smile to her face knowing that her child was happy and somewhat oblivious to what was going on around her. Not knowing what was going on made Emma lucky. Childhood had so many benefits.

“Hey Jellybean,” Olivia called out, but her voice cracked at the nickname and tears started to well back into her eyes. She watched as Emma turned and smiled at her before she leapt out of her chair. The little girl ran to her and she crouched down to hug the little bundle of joy.

“Hi mommy!” the chipper voice made things a little more bearable. Olivia looked up at Jane and saw a small smile on her lips before she left them alone.

“How’s my girl?” The question came out raspy and it made Emma curious, but before she could ask what was going on, Olivia stood up and avoided her eyes by fiddling with something on the desk.

“I’m good, school was good. What about you?” Olivia bit her lower lip and held back the tears. She took a deep breath and faced her daughter, continuing a forced smile.

“I’m good…Uh, did you eat yet, baby?” Emma shook her head. “All right, why don’t we go to Company and get something to eat, okay?”

“Okay!” Olivia nodded and smiled, watching her daughter so excited for burgers and fries. Emma grabbed her hand, dragging her out of the room. She was glad that Emma was being spared of the trouble surrounding them. However, looking at that bright smile with that twinkle in Emma’s eyes, she was reminded of that little girl Krista was. They both had that wonderful personality and brightness between them. Olivia loved Emma more than anything and if she had to live through the trials that life had to offer, at least she knew she was living for someone who made it worthwhile.
