One Moment In Time A week passed since Krista first moved into the farmhouse with Rafe and Natalia. Everything seemed to have gone smoothly; checking in with the parole officer was not a hassle, rehabilitation seemed to be going well, Alan was out of the way, and Rafe and Krista seemed to grow closer with every passing day. Despite the small talks over breakfast and dinner, Natalia still felt as if she knew nothing about Krista. The relationship she had developed with Rafe made her uneasy. She was glad her son was able to have a friend who he could talk to and was close to him, but it was the closeness that started to irk her.
What also bothered Natalia was the tension between Olivia and Krista. She found herself caught in the middle of some implicit war between the two sisters. When Olivia first visited Krista, everything had appeared to be going well, until Olivia suggested that Krista volunteer at the Beacon so they could possibly cheat her community service requirements. When the suggestion came to light, Krista nearly bit Olivia’s head off saying that “cutting corners” would solve nothing and that she refused to work someplace that appeared to “serve no communal purpose.” That visit ended with Krista stomping off to her room, Olivia standing frustrated in the living room and Natalia and Rafe hiding in the kitchen.
Natalia seemed willing at first to stop the arguing because in her house, no one should be allowed to raise their voices and use a string of expletives just to say a point; that kind of talk was left outside, but the passion beneath each of the arguing women’s voices sort of scared her. She knew Olivia was able to use a gun and throw a punch, but she also knew how physically capable Krista was unarmed, so diving into that crossfire would have most likely gotten her killed. She almost had Rafe go into the living room to stop the argument, but he too seemed reluctant. Luckily, for both mother and son, the argument ended before any kind of harm was induced. Natalia was more grateful that it ended before Olivia had a heart attack. Due to that failed visit, both Natalia and Olivia both agreed that seeing each other at the farmhouse while Krista was there would have to be limited; their relationship would have to be put on hold.
Now, this was the second attempt Olivia had for the farmhouse. Maybe this time some civility would be maintained by both of them; she knew that her temper was miles shorter than Krista’s and only two people could make that young woman frustrated beyond belief: Alan and Olivia.
Olivia made her way to the front door and, out of habit, nearly walked in, but she managed to stop herself and knock. She watched as the door opened with Krista standing behind it. She noticed how less battered the other woman was; there were the permanent scars on her forehead as well as her left eye, but nonetheless she looked better.
“Hey, come in,” Krista breathed as she forced on a smile and motioned for Olivia to enter.
“Afternoon, Kolt,” Olivia smiled back, watching her sister flinch at the unused nickname as she walked inside the house. “So, how are you?” Krista slowly closed the door and chuckled at Olivia’s attempt at small talk. They both walked into the living room and awkwardly stood around the coffee table.
“I’m good; did you want something to drink?”
“What do you have?” Both of them headed to the kitchen and Olivia took a seat at the table.
“This kitchen has coffee, orange juice, apple juice, regular milk, chocolate milk, soda, water, white wine, red wine and a six-pack of beer,” Krista answered back as she leaned back against the counter, waiting for Olivia’s choice. She saw the raised eyebrows on her sister and giggled knowing all too well the question of how there was alcohol in the house with Rafe and Natalia present.
“How exactly do you have beer here?”
“Is that what you want?” Krista questioned with a hint of a smirk across her lips.
“I’ll take the coffee, but…” Olivia watched as Krista firmly pressed her foot against a wooden floor board that started to creak.
“I had someone come in while Rafe and Natalia were at work and make sure that nothing would interfere with the beer while it was under there. Now, be quiet because neither of them knows about it,” Krista grinned as she saw the impressed look on Olivia’s face.
“Know about what?” Natalia asked as she walked into the kitchen, placing a hand on Olivia’s shoulder as she smiled at her.
“That Olivia is a big softy behind the tough exterior,” Krista covered up as she reached for a mug from the cupboard and filled it with coffee. As she turned around, she was greeted by what she would call the googly-eyes-of-teenage-love between her sister and Natalia. She could have been completely wrong by what she saw, but she was sure enough and all she needed was confirmation from one of them. Her instincts rarely ever failed. She was definitely talking to one of them soon.
“I already know that; living with her for a few months makes you see a person differently,” Natalia replied back as she moved away from Olivia and made herself her own cup of coffee. Krista bit back her giggles when she saw the blatant show of emotion between the two women.
“So, you found out that Olivia snores when she sleeps?” Olivia sent a withering glare at Krista, who started to grin widely.
“I do not snore!”
“Okay, before both of you go off again, I have a couple of files that you need to look at, Olivia. So, if you don’t mind, can we deal with that?” Natalia intervened as she stood in between the other two women.
“Sure,” Olivia breathed as she reached for her cup of coffee and stood up. Natalia turned to Krista and saw her shrug and wave them away.
“Come on,” Natalia stated as she motioned for Olivia to follow her. Krista bowed her head and sighed as she heard footsteps rustle upstairs.
“Couple of files, yeah right. For all I know they’re - oh god, visuals!” Krista slammed her palm over her eyes and wished for the images that flooded her mind to go away. She was glad that her sister was happy, but some things had to stay untouched and Rafe was lucky enough to be in his room when this little situation occurred. Fortunately, a knock came from the front door to interrupt her thoughts. “I’ve got it!” She made her way to the door and opened it, surprised to see who was standing behind it.
“Hey Kolt, what’s up?” Krista stood shell-shocked in her spot at the visitor.
“H-Hey Lizzie - Alan’s not here with you, right?” Lizzie chuckled at the question, but more for the fact that Krista poked her head out the door and scanned the entire front field and driveway for Alan.
“Of course not, after last time the last thing I want to do is take him with me to see you,” Lizzie answered back as she watched Krista step away from the door to let her inside. Lizzie stepped into the living room and watched Krista close the door. She was pulled into a one armed hug; Krista’s other arm being in a sling.
“It’s been too long, maybe this time we can get a decent reunion minus the drama,” Krista sighed in relief as she pulled away from the other woman, but she ran her right hand along Lizzie’s arm, holding her hand.

“I wonder who that is,” Natalia murmured into Olivia’s shoulder as she wrapped her arms around the other woman’s waist. Apparently, looking over a couple of files meant looking over a couple of files and a long hug with the door closed.
“Kolt’s obviously got it under control, so I don’t think you should worry,” Olivia whispered into Natalia’s ear, letting her warm breath slowly brush the delicate skin. She smiled to herself when she felt Natalia shiver against her.
“I’m glad that you two didn’t try and kill each other again like last time,” Natalia breathed, nuzzling Olivia’s neck. She started to smile when she felt hands slide down against her back. She moved her head far enough to look at Olivia and saw the small smile on her lips.
“Yeah, she was really okay with me and no yelling. There was a little tension, but everything else was really good. Too bad you cut us off,” Olivia joked as she tilted her head to the side, bringing up her right hand, brushing her fingertips along Natalia’s cheek.
“Well, Krista’s occupied with a guest, Rafe’s in his room, and we’re here in my room with the door closed and locked. So, you know, we shouldn’t be interrupted,” Natalia grinned as she placed her hands on Olivia’s shoulders.
“This isn’t what?! How is this not what it looks likes?” Olivia and Natalia turned to the door from the exclamation and pulled away from each other. Natalia quickly unlocked the door and opened it, finding Rafe standing at the railing beside the stairs. She walked over beside him and Olivia stood beside her, looking down the stairs.
“What’s going on?” Olivia whispered as she glanced over at Rafe who appeared bewildered by the cry from downstairs.
“Kolt, it really isn’t a big deal-“
“Lizzie, you’re engaged! How is that not a big deal? You said you would wait, but here you are engaged to Bill Lewis.” Olivia, Natalia and Rafe leaned against the railing and tried to figure out what was going on.
“Krista, come on, it isn’t that bad-“
“Lizzie...”
“Krista, I know what I said and I still mean it!”
“But you committed yourself to Bill, so everything you’ve said is invalid now.” Olivia furrowed her brow as she tried to understand the argument that occurred below.
“I love y-“
“Don’t you dare say that to me now, please; because it won’t go well from here on out. Just leave, Lizzie, I need to think,” Krista quickly interjected. Rafe narrowed his eyes and realized what was going on. He glanced over to the women beside him and noticed how oblivious they were to the situation; their expressions were lost.
“Krista, can we just figure out what’s going on?”
“Lizzie, everything is already figured out, now. Please leave.”
“Krista-“
“Elizabeth Spaulding... just... go,” Krista trailed off into a whisper. Rafe, Natalia and Olivia listened as silence overtook the entire house. All of them remained still as they heard the front door open and close. They swore they heard someone sniffling, but could not figure out who it was. All three of them slowly made their way down the stairs and saw a distressed Krista leaning against the fireplace mantle.
“Krista?” Olivia whispered as she approached her sister. She carefully placed a hand on the other woman’s shoulder, but Krista immediately recoiled away.
“Just... back off, please,” Krista said as she backed away from Olivia and moved to the kitchen, walking out of the house.
“Krista!” Olivia cried out as she rushed to the kitchen with Rafe and Natalia behind her. She was ready to follow her sister out to the back fields, but someone grabbed her wrist. She turned around and found Rafe holding onto her. She sent him a questioning look, but saw the knowledge in his eyes.
“I’ll go check on her,” Rafe softly said as he released Olivia’s wrist and waited for her response. He watched as Olivia stared at him before she shut her eyes and allowed him to go. “She’ll be okay.”
“Yeah,” Olivia breathed as she opened her eyes and saw Rafe run out of the house. She looked out the window and saw him chase after her sister, hoping that she was really okay.
