DDR: Where it went

Sep 12, 2011 14:57

You may have noticed I haven't been spamming the journal with DDR entries since July 18. The reason for that is I stopped doing DDR due to a foot injury, which as I reckon things, has just finished healing this week.

Now the next part is going to be boring but I'm writing this out for my own documentation because I finally figured out that this is a pattern. I've had this recurring ache in my right foot for quite a while - years - now. It comes and goes and I have gotten into the habit of basically ignoring it. Thus, I haven't really had a good sense of when it starts up and when it stops. I just have this vague idea that every so often I "take it easy" and after a while I resume doing whatever.

I mentioned it to my doctor two years ago and he recommended I wear arch supports, which indeed helped some with the discomfort. I think the supports helped my knees a lot more. Something I'm doing, perhaps wearing a certain pair of very flat shoes, perhaps the jumping in DDR despite the foam core mat I'm doing it on, is goofing something up serious. And, I really don't know how long or how much activity it takes to bring the ache back. At the point I stopped doing DDR, if I rolled over in bed and the top of my foot laid on the mattress, I would get a brief shooting pain. That's not sore feet.

Of COURSE, I should have gone to the doctor THEN. But with this "take a little break" mentality I've had, I just figured it would heal quickly. I think it took 3 or 4 weeks before the top stopped being sore, and it's still had occasional dull aches since then. It's been about 3 days or so since I had any twinges so I am guessing that I am now as "fully healed" as I get.

Which brings me back to the part I'm catching on to. There have been a couple times I was getting back into DDR and then I stopped and it was hard to resume. And really what's been happening is I've been taking "two week breaks" that were 4, 6, 8 weeks. This pattern has just been something I haven't registering.

It's interesting too, because now that my foot's healed up and I think I could resume DDR, it's also the point where I feel like I'm getting winded easily again. In other words, my cardio fitness level just dropped a notch so it's a good thing I can resume again. This timing ALSO feels familiar.

So, in conclusion I'm going to start doing DDR again, and if/as soon as my foot starts twinging, I'm going to see my doctor so I can find out what's really going on with it.

health, ddr
