Character: Ronald Speirs
Summary: Lt. Speirs’ motivation for speaking to Pvt. Blythe.
He kneels down so that he is almost eye-level with Blythe, wanting to help the trooper understand. Once Blythe knows the secret, he will rule his fear, instead of letting the fear rule him. The secret is this; they are all dead men. They just haven’t ceased breathing yet. Their fates were sealed the minute they boarded the planes. They cannot hope to survive, only to do their duty honorably. A soldier who accepts this, who fights as if he is already dead, will not feel fear, or pain, or compassion, or remorse. Such a man is invincible.
So he finishes his explanation, gives one last nod of satisfaction, and melts back into the darkness.
