This is going back three weeks to the day after closing, to document the process of making My-house-in-the-woods livable.
Equipped with air mattresses and toothbrushes, we moved in right after the closing. Prior to that, I've arranged for the following day to have internet and cable TV installed. In retrospect, I should have done some research on internet providers as well, considering that I've researched everything else regarding this house/neighborhood, but I hadn't and as it turns out, there are only two providers. Bright House is the better one, and it's truly dismal. I pay almost twice as much as before for twitchy internet. It's not bad in the main house, but in the guest house the reception is week. And that's after we bought a range extender. I never thought I would say this, but I miss Comcast. On the bright side, this is a semi rural area and I have my trees.
We have well water here, and I knew before I bought the house that the filter needed work. The cold water didn't smell awful, but the first night when I took a shower it was like wallowing in a rotten egg scented steam. Mistake number two was that I'd assumed the filter would work for a month or two, giving me enough time to look into what type to buy. It took me five days to narrow it down and get one installed, and in the meantime, I was holding my breath while taking showers. And gagged, because I can't hold my breath for that long. Now we have clean water that smells good.
I've also gotten scores of estimates for the several remodeling jobs, so I call week one a success.
