Let's talk television. I don't watch a lot of tv anymore, but there are a few current shows that I enjoy to varying degrees. What do you love, hate, never miss? I want to know. :)
~Akuni's 2008-2009 tv watch list~
Spoiler free for the upcoming seasons, because I prefer to watch things unfold without knowing about it ahead of time, but anything that happened last season is fair game for discussion. You have been warned. :) Also, if you love spoilers and have been eating them up all summer, I ask that you please don't share them here, because I wanna be surprised. :) Thanks!
House M.D.
Season 5 begins airing Tuesday, September 16th.
The tidbits I've picked up about the first story arc (because you know I don't do spoilers, but I did watch a few promo trailers and cast interviews, and it's a no-brainer what they're going to deal with first) have me really looking forward to it. I've always enjoyed Hugh Laurie's work, and he is brilliant in this, but I freely admit that 50% of the reason I watch is Wilson. ;) It's unusual for me to stick with a show into its 5th season, but so far they've avoided jumping the shark pretty well. Seeing how House and Wilson change and react after Amber and the truckloads of baggage they earned at the end of last season is what I'm anxious to see, as their twisted friendship is my favourite part of the show. Well, that and I want to see Thirteen in the middle of a Cuddy and Cameron sandwich, but I know I won't get that, even with Bryan Singer around - unless House has another hallucination, hmm... ;p
Supernatural
Season 4 begins airing Thursday, September 18th.
This show is lame, and I love it. Ok that's not at all fair. *ducks bricks* It's a really cheesy show, with a strange appeal that keeps me watching - and no, it's not to stare at Jared and Jensen (who I remember seeing as Eric Brady on Days, for godssake, lol! Funny that his twin sister was named "Sami" there - it kept pinging my memory every time I heard Dean say "Sammy!", and I'm ashamed that it took me more than a handful of episodes to figure out why.). It has some really great episodes, and, with the exception of a few duds early in S3, has actually gotten progressively better overall. I have a rough idea of the first story arc of this show as well (another no-brainer, IMO), and if done right it could be amazing. Hopefully Sam will let Bobby help him get Dean out of Hell, because Bobby makes everything better! I hope that his awesomeness won't seal his doom, though... the boys have already lost everything else, I don't think they need to lose the last person left they can count on.
Top Gear
Series 12 begins this fall. We still don't have a firm airdate, but it'll probably be 3rd week October.
I'm so glad the Cool Wall came back last series! Though they didn't make much use of it, I didn't really mind so much as it made room for challenges and the fun race across Japan. I'm also glad they're doing two stars in the reasonably priced car now, because there's a better chance one of them won't be boring, and there's a better chance I'll know who one of them is. I know a surprising number, but a lot of the UK celebs aren't known to me. So bring on the dorky, middle-aged men and the pretty cars! :D
Battlestar Galactica
The second half of season 4 begins airing in January 2009. There will be more webisodes and movies at some point during the next year as well.
I'm glad they're wrapping it up. I'm still interested in it, but during s3 and the first half of s4, some storylines drifted to places that weren't interesting, and there were more than a few episodes that were, frankly, kinda dull. For a show that once had me thrilling on the edge of my seat every week, that's pretty bad. But that's a sad standard that you can apply to just about every tv show out there; no matter how good the first seasons, things often start to deteriorate in s3.
Torchwood
Series 3 will air in spring 2009, as a 5-episode miniseries.
With that approach, I will be watching. I don't know if another series like the first two would've been compelling enough, despite all the pretty, the rampant omni-sexuality (hehe), the refreshingly adult language, and potential appearances by James Marsters. :P It's a genuinely bad show, at the bottom of the barrel; plots aside (because no one ever watched Dr Who for the plots!), the acting is hit-and-miss, the characters are sometimes painfully 2D, and John Barrowman may be a wonderful singer but his acting is consistently weak and the fact that he's Tom Cruise's doppleganger is unappealing. With Tosh and Owen gone (the characters interesting to me), that leaves Gwen, Jack, and Ianto - and while I do like Ianto, that wouldn't have been enough to make me sit through another long series. I wonder who the new team members will be, though - with the right new characters, things could be saved.
Red Dwarf
A new one-hour episode, at last after so many years, to begin filming in October, release date unknown.
*SPAZFLAILSQUEE* That is all! :D
What am I missing, peeps? What are you guys looking forward to on tv in the upcoming year?
