Ah. No, Jason is not stable. Some would argue that he wasn't stable (while others would say he just had anger issues) before the Joker killed him.

I don't think he's the self-absorbed psychotic that Morrison made him, but Winick's Lost Days mini played on Jason's various issues, as did the original Under the Hood run of Batman. Both of which I would recommend getting if you'd like to get to know Jason.

The hair colour thing, well that's a long standing mess ^_^;; And there are a couple of reasons for it.

1) the pre-crisis Jay Todd was a strawberry blond. He was also a Dick clone. Same back ground, same family/upbringing, same skill set, etc. While post-crisis (I should mention this is the Crisis on Infinite Earths that happened in the 80s) Jason was the black hair street rat that tried to steel the tires off the Batmobile.

2) Morrison may have been going for a visual gag, using the hair colour to designate Jason as the "redheaded step child" of the family. Personally though I find that one pretty weak and is another reason I'm not found of Morrison writing the Batbooks.

And for the record, I wasn't annoyed. I just couldn't see where you were coming from and was very confused.
