“Hey,” Hyukjae happily greeted as he sat down beside Jooyeon. She was early in class, as usual, already writing something down in her notebook. Her hair was knotted up in a bun.

“Oppa,” Jooyeon said, chuckling as he peeked into her notebook. “Hi!”

“What’s with the rigid hair?” he asked, poking at her bun with his pen.

“Jungsoo oppa likes it that way,” she told him carelessly. When she realized what she said, she looked at Hyukjae and tried to take it back. But it was too late. His face had already turned sour.

“What’s with you and that guy?” he queried seriously. “It’s like he shows up and you just do everything he says. Is he an old boyfriend or something?”

“Oppa, are you jealous?” she asked, trying to make the conversation light. She chuckled.

“Of course you’re avoiding the question,” he retorted in sarcasm, grabbing his stuff. “I’ll see you later.” He got up and moved to the other side of the room to sit there instead.

Jooyeon sighed as Hyukjae turned his back on her. It wasn’t about jealousy and she knew that. Ever since Jungsoo got back, she started hanging out with him more often that she saw them. It wasn’t like she wanted this to happen. She missed them terribly but it was something she had to do. It nearly killed her to not be able to explain everything to them, especially Hyukjae, whom she considered another of her best friends. He was starting to get really mad at her. She hoped there was some way she could explain.

“Hi babe,” Jungsoo greeted, sliding onto the seat beside her. He immediately gave her a kiss on the head.

“I thought we talked about displaying affection in public,” Jooyeon quietly said, closing and opening her right fist, trying to calm herself down. She hated it that he publicly branded her as his when they had no relationship whatsoever. “And stop calling me babe.”

“Aww c’mon, Joo,” he said, chuckling a little. “What’s wrong with you today? Why so uptight?”

Jooyeon decided to ignore him and started writing in her notebook again. Discreetly, she looked over to where Hyukjae had gone. With Donghae.

When Hyukjae was sure that Jooyeon had looked away, he watched her as her new friend sat down beside her and gave her a kiss. His eyes narrowed. It was obvious that Jooyeon didn’t like the setup she was in. There was something she wasn’t telling them. Yet again. He really couldn’t understand her sometimes. She seemed like an open person, but one with a lot of secrets. He sighed.

“Leave her alone, Hyuk,” Donghae quietly told him without looking up from his book.

Hyukjae turned to him. “I’m surprised that you, of all people, are choosing to ignore this.”

“It’s her decision,” Donghae lightly responded with a hint of sarcasm. “We can’t do anything if she doesn’t want us to do anything. She obviously likes hanging out with the guy.”

“And you seem so happy about that fact,” Hyukjae responded in disdain. “Really, Hae, of all people, you could do something about this.”

Donghae shook his head. “Jooyeon’s made everything perfectly clear to me.” How he came to that conclusion, he wasn’t sure. He just felt it.

“No, she hasn’t,” Hyukjae interjected. “You keep on assuming things. She’s never actually said anything and that’s because you’ve never said anything. Do you really expect her, Jooyeon, of all people, to say something first?”

“What are you guys talking about?” Taeyeon asked, sitting down beside Donghae. She turned on her seat to face Hyukjae, who was seated behind Donghae.

“Why aren’t you doing something about this, Taeng?” Hyukjae asked, nodding towards Jooyeon and Jungsoo.

Taeyeon followed his line of sight and sighed, looking away. “It’s too complicated,” she told him apologetically. How she wished she could do something about the whole thing. But she was afraid of what Jungsoo might do. She was also afraid about what could happen to Jooyeon.

“How is it complicated?” Hyukjae demanded. “Just tell the guy to give Jooyeon a break. She obviously doesn’t want to be with him.”

Taeyeon looked at him in surprise. “You can tell?” She thought Jooyeon was pretending pretty well. No one else seemed to have noticed that she was doing this against her will.

“We can all tell,” Donghae dryly commented.

“Oh,” Taeyeon replied.

Donghae finally lifted his head up to look at Jooyeon. He found that she was looking at him. They just looked at each other for a couple of seconds. It appeared like she was studying him, like assuring herself if it would be okay to give him a smile. Which she did. It was a small smile. He almost didn’t notice it, but it was there. He was deciding on how to respond when Mira arrived. This time he was sure he noticed Jooyeon’s frown.

“I’m surprised to find you here.” Jooyeon jumped and immediately looked up. Heechul smiled as he sat down beside her. “Does Donghae know you’re here again?”

Jooyeon shook her head. In truth, she had started keeping her promise to Donghae. After watching his first game, she began watching all his practices without telling him. It was best that he didn’t know. Eunhye had made it perfectly clear that she was going accidentally tell people about her and Jungsoo if she came too close to him. Although she didn’t understand what her motivation was for doing such. It was obvious that Hyukjae and Donghae didn’t like her. Besides, wasn’t Mira Donghae’s girlfriend?

“He doesn’t have to know,” she said.

“But he would appreciate knowing,” he responded, looking at her. She merely smiled. “How have you been, Jooyeon?”

“I’ve been okay,” she answered. “What about you, oppa? I hear you went out on a date with… was it Jessica?”

He snickered. “Where did you ever hear that?”

“Kangin oppa told Tiffany about it,” she recalled. “So it’s true?”

“It was one date,” was his reply. “She’s too much like me.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?” she asked, tilting her head to look clearly at him. “I mean, you’re supposed to look for things that you have in common with the other person, right?”

“So what do you have in common with Jungsoo?” Heechul inquired straightforwardly. Jooyeon’s cheerful disposition disappeared just like that. She looked at the field and watched as Donghae kicked the ball, which sailed straight into the goal. “You don’t have anything in common with him, do you?”

She cleared her throat uncomfortably. “We have some things in common,” she answered, but didn’t elaborate. She hadn’t had a thing in common with Jungsoo for a long time now.

“What’s going on with you, Jooyeon?” Heechul asked so softly and so sympathetically that she felt like crying. “Why won’t you tell us?”

“Don’t worry about me, oppa,” Jooyeon quietly assured him.

Heechul sighed, put an arm around her and brought her closer to him. It was impossible for him or for anyone else in their group of friends to not worry about her. Everyday they were seeing how Jooyeon was changing right before their eyes and they couldn’t do anything about it. It had something to do about that Jungsoo guy. He just knew it.

Suddenly Heechul stood up, making her stand with him.

“Where are we going?” Jooyeon asked, surprised.

“We’re going to congratulate Donghae on a practice well done,” he told her innocently. Before she could answer, he pulled her down the bleachers towards the field, where the soccer players were walking and joshing with each other, happy about practice being over.

“Ya! Donghae, kick the ball here!” Hyukjae yelled to him, waving his arms. Donghae ignored him and went on doing some ball tricks. They hadn’t noticed Jooyeon and Heechul watching at the sidelines.

Heechul jogged over to Hyukjae, who looked at Jooyeon. He gave her a wave. Donghae turned around.

“What are you doing here?” Donghae asked Jooyeon, walking over to her after kicking the ball in Hyukjae’s direction. Heechul and Hyukjae then began to tackle each other, fighting over the ball.

“I’m keeping my promise,” Jooyeon reminded him, smiling a little. “You’re doing very well, oppa. I’m sure you’ll win your next game again with how hard you’re practicing.”

“You watch my practices every week?” he asked, eyes wide in surprise.

She merely smiled. “Where’s Mira? I haven’t seen her around.”

“She left for China,” he shared with her. They sat down on a bench and watched as Heechul locked Hyukjae’s neck in his arm.

“For vacation? I’m sure she’ll be back soon,” she gave him a comforting look.

“She’s not coming back,” he relayed. “They’re staying there for good.”

“Oh. I’m sorry about that. I’m sure you guys will be able to talk all the time. There’s emails and the phone,” she said at once, feeling bad.

He chuckled. “It’s fine. It’s not a big deal.”

“Of course it’s a big deal,” she interjected. “If my boyfriend left to stay on some other country for good, I’d be devastated and would do anything to keep in contact with him.”

“Is that so?” he teased.

“Yes.” She nodded forcefully. “You must miss her.”

He carefully watched Jooyeon’s reaction as he agreed with her hasty conclusion. She smiled, but she looked away. He began to wonder if he should take Hyukjae’s suggestion and be straight with her about his feelings.

“But,” he proceeded, catching her eye. “It doesn’t matter. We’ll always still be friends.”

Jooyeon’s eyes widened at this, bringing a hand to her mouth. “You didn’t break up!”

He chuckled. “Mira was never my girlfriend.”

Jooyeon looked even more taken aback at this piece of information. It took her a couple of seconds to fully process what he said. Donghae smiled at her.

“But I thought…?” she began, but trailed away confusedly.

“She’s a family friend. Her parents and brother left for China first because she had to fix her papers so I helped her out because she had no one with her,” he explained.

“I see,” was her quiet response. She thought back on all of the times she saw them with each other and thought about them being together. How could she have not known this? No one even bothered to tell her. Well, she never really asked anyone either.

Jooyeon blushed when she saw Donghae watching her with a small smile on his face. Contrary to her opinion, he actually thought it was cute that she kept on thinking that Mira was his girlfriend. Now he understood why she kept on distancing herself from him.

To remove the awkward atmosphere, he randomly asked, “What are you doing after school?”

~ * ~

Jooyeon giggled as Donghae helped her up Hyukjae’s tree house. When he had asked if she was doing anything after school, she thought he was thinking of watching a movie or eating out. It’s not that she was complaining. She was just pleasantly surprised. The tree house gave her a lot of good memories. Ones that she missed terribly, she realized.

“We have a ton of supplies,” Donghae proclaimed, showing her the fully stocked mini fridge, as well as the big basket of chips beside it.

“Are you planning to keep me here forever?” Jooyeon joked as she went through all the supplies. There were even additional games for the PS3 and new stack of DVDs.

“Can you live on these forever?” he asked, looking amazed.

She laughed. “Really, oppa. You didn’t have to do this.” She sat down on the edge of the bed.

“But I want to do this,” he maintained, taking a seat beside her. He paused, wondering how to say what he wanted to say. “You haven’t… been the same.” She looked at him. “It’s like you’re hiding something and, in the process, we’re losing you.”

She watched as he looked away and stared at the floor, his hands clasped together. If he only knew how she felt… how she wanted to scream everything out. But she wasn’t sure he would understand. If anything, she wanted him to understand the most. However, she didn’t know if he would. She would rather not say anything and not find out.

“I don’t want to lose you,” she whispered, averting her gaze from him. This was as close as she could get to showing him how she felt about everything. And it was true. She really didn’t want to lose him.

“You’re not going to lose me,” he promised, suddenly grabbing her hand and clasping it with both of his.

Instinctively, she leaned her head on his shoulder, while he wrapped his arm around her. “Oppa,” she quietly requested, “can you sing that song for me again?”

Donghae didn’t have to ask what song she was referring to. Squeezing her arm gently, he began to hum.

“This night is blessing the day that we met.
The moon is out in the sky and the stars are smiling.
I wish that your smile won’t be erased as I pray
for these happy days to always continue.
When there are hard times, if I’d just listen to your
voice for a moment, I could forget everything and laugh it off.”

“I really like that song,” Jooyeon said, closing her eyes. “It makes me feel like everything’s going to be okay.” She sighed contentedly. “What’s it called?”

“Believe.”
