Kyuhyun froze in his spot on the couch as he paused what he was watching on the television. He was pretty sure he heard some shuffling from the direction of the kitchen, and he was positive that he was the only one left at the 11th floor dorms today. Contrary to popular belief, Kyuhyun didn't only play Starcraft when he had some time off. He had other interests too - interests that actually matter, like food, reading Reader's Digest (Surprisingly, Kyuhyun loved to learn new stuff other than new pranks to use on his hyungs.), food, watching Koreanovelas (He especially likes those historical-themed ones.), more food, and of course, Sungmin. It's such a shame his boyfriend had schedules though.
Anyway, now that Kyuhyun finally had some time off after his nightly musicals and the recent SS4, he was resolute on spending the whole day catching up on the drama episodes he had missed. Micky Yoochun's face froze on the screen as he paused Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Kyuhyun tilted his head to the side, straining his ears to listen for more of that sound. Then there it was again - a short moan of some sort, like a disembodied voice of someone in anguish. Kyuhyun felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. That sound was definitely not human.
Kyuhyun had heard lots of stories from fellow members and tenants alike. He refused to believe them, of course. He had always thought that it was just his Leeteuk-hyung's way of scaring them so they'd sleep early - or you know, as early as idol life permits them to. Now that he was experiencing such a thing, he couldn't help but think that there was truth in the hearsay after all. He knew he had to find out about it no matter what.
Curiosity killed the cat. Kyuhyun cursed under his breath as he slowly made his way to the kitchen, tiptoeing so as not to make any noise that might alert this... spirit... that he was around. He poked his head inside, wary of any flying objects that may come his way. Yeah, he watched movies too much. He didn't see anything out of the ordinary. The kitchen was still pristine, just the way Ryeowook had left it when he moved to the upstairs dorm some months ago.
Kyuhyun shrugged his shoulders and went in, He opened the fridge and got the milk carton out, drinking straight from the box and tossing the empty milk box in the bin thereafter. Just then, he heard the sound again. He could swear it came from the floor itself, or at least, somewhere below him. Kyuhyun bolted immediately, too scared out of his wits to notice that Cacao had wandered into the kitchen. He tripped on the poor fluff ball, yelping in pain as he hit the floor with a thud. Still, the adrenaline in his veins kept him from feeling the pain. He ran to the bathroom, slamming the door shut behind him.
Kyuhyun fumbled for the light switch and went straight to the sink, splashing his face with cold water. As he went back up to stare at his reflection, he screamed a manly scream when he saw the words written on the mirror in red. All the color drained from his face as he processed the words written on it: "Goodbye Kyuhyun." You could just imagine how he was so frightened by this time. Seeing a ghost was one thing. Having that ghost threaten your life by writing crude messages on your bathroom mirror with something presumably was blood is a different story.
Kyuhyun hastily ran out of the bathroom, locking himself in his shared room with Sungmin. He slid down the floor with his back against the wood, panting as beads of sweat fell from his temple. He shut his eyes for a while, willing himself to calm down. As he opened them, his gaze landed on the table calendar on his desk. It displayed the date and day for today.
Friday the 13th
The anxiety in Kyuhyun's heart came back with a revenge. He could remember a memory from his distant childhood wherein his mom told him that evil spirits come out on Friday the 13th. Suddenly, Kyuhyun wasn't too glad that he got a day off today. He was at the brink of crying, burying his head in between his knees as he felt helpless from this unknown entity that was toying with him.
Just then, the doorknob above him rattled, making him shiver in fright. He eyed the piece of metal wearily, backing away from the door until his back collided with the edge of his desk. He picked up the nearest sharp object he could reach and aimed it towards the door, hoping against hope that ghosts were afraid of pencils. Perhaps they magically disintegrate when stabbed by lead, no?
As if on cue, his cellphone blared, EXO's MAMA resounding all throughout the four corners of the room, seemingly a soundtrack to this horror movie he was in... except that this wasn't a movie and Kyuhyun was seriously fucked. Sure, he liked the song, he had set it as his ring tone after all. But it was doing nothing but to aggravate the situation right now. Why was it such a scary song anyway!?
The door suddenly swung open, Kyuhyun immediately running towards the window in his hopes to escape, cursing as he figured he couldn't get out even if he wanted to due to the hundreds of bottles of wine that adorned the sill.
"Ah... Why didn't you answer your phone? Aisssh...What a long day. I'm gonna sleep for a while since I have Sukira later and --- Kyu? Kyu? Are you okay?" Sungmin walked into the room, dropping his bag onto the floor and running towards the younger as he saw him claw at the glass pane of their window.
"Sung---min hyung? Minnie? Minimi!!!" Kyuhyun stopped his useless struggle for escape when he heard the familiar voice, immediately throwing himself at the shorter man who seemed to be too shocked to complain.
"Yeah it's me. Kyubear? What's wrong?" Sungmin asked worriedly as he took note of the wetness on his shoulders as Kyuhyun buried his face on his shirt.
"G-Ghost... ghosts... they're coming... for me. Don't leave me, hyung. I'll go to Sukira with you. I don't care if I don't get paid. I'm going! Please!" Kyuhyun clung tighter as sobs wracked his body.
"Wait... what? Ghosts? They're not real, Kyu. How could you say that?" Sungmin whispered into the other's ear,
"Yes! Some ghost... something is haunting me. I was watching TV at the living room when I heard this disembodied moaning voice and it went on and on and I got too scared and I tripped on Cacao and then there was a death note on the bathroom mirror and..." Kyuhyun stammered, barely managing to keep himself from shuddering.
"Easy. I don't understand. Explain slowly," Sungmin cooed onto the younger's hair, the brunet leaning in to the touch.
Just then Sen walked into the still open door, meowing a weird meow that made Kyuhyun stop in the middle of his sob-fest.
"That... sound." Kyuhyun blinked as he straightened up, eyeing the orange fur ball in a contemplative manner.
"Oh yeah. Poor Sen has a cough. I have yet to take him to the vet. He can't even caterwaul properly," Sungmin said as he stared sadly at his pet before turning back to Kyuhyun, who looked as if he swallowed a vat of toxic waste or something.
"Kyu? Kyubear? Are you okay? Don't tell me... You got scared of Sen's voice?" Sungmin asked, unsure, bursting out in laughter when Kyuhyun all but nodded.
"Ya! Don't make fun of me. It was really creepy, you know. Not only that, I saw someone write "Goodbye Kyuhyun" on the bathroom mirror using blood! Now, you tell me that's not something to be afraid of." Kyuhyun squeaked indignantly, defending whatever was left of his man pride with a huge ass pout on his face, like a boss.
At this point, Sungmin was literally rolling on the floor laughing as Kyuhyun stared at him incredulously, wanting nothing more than for his boyfriend to actually believe him. Sungmin rolled for another two minutes before he sat back up, wiping tears of joy from his eyes.
"Sorry, Kyubear. That was me," Sungmin gasped in between chuckles as he withdrew a tube of lipstick from his bag on the floor - the red one he used whenever he was playing Marilyn Monroe. "I knew I should've put Kyubear instead. It's just that I was in a hurry and you were still asleep so I thought I'd leave you a message there. But before I could finish, Junghoon-hyung had already hauled me out of the bathroom as I was already running late for my schedule. Sorry!" Sungmin grinned sheepishly at the younger, almost squealing in delight when Kyuhyun's pout became more pronounced, his chubby cheeks looking as if they're about to burst any second.
"Oh god I can't believe this. I can't believe you! It really is Friday the 13th, seeing that I'm getting so unlucky like this. Ugh!" Sungmin found Kyuhyun's tantrum cute, and he reached out to pinch the squirming boy's cheek. "I hate the number thirteen!"
"N'awww don't be like that Kyubear. Thirteen is my favorite number, mind you," Sungmin chided, coaxing the maknae to calm down by rubbing his hands up and down the maknae's arms.
"Yeah yeah. Whatever. Just because we're thirteen in the band, you find that wretched number significant," Kyuhyun spat bitterly, crossing his arms on his chest.
Sungmin smiled patiently and patted Kyuhyun on the head - a feat he couldn't do quite often. Good thing Kyuhyun was sitting on the floor while he was kneeling. "Well, there's that. But that's not really the main reason though."
Kyuhyun got curious and immediately stopped his sulking to look at Sungmin. He should really learn to tone down his curiosity, period.
"Then what is it?" Kyuhyun couldn't help but ask. Sungmin was one of his more important "interests" after all.
"It's you," Sungmin blushed as he said it, the tinge of pink on his cheeks complementing his alabaster skin.
"What?" Kyuhyun clarified, not enlightened by Sungmin's vague answer, at all.
"I said, it's you," Sungmin repeated, a little louder than before, gaining confidence as he took Kyuhyun's hand in his and intertwined their fingers with each other, their hands nothing but a perfect fit. "You're the reason I love the number thirteen. You're the thirteenth member, Kyubear. You're the miracle that saved this band from disbanding... you're my miracle. How could I ever consider hating a number that reminds me of you unlucky when fate made me the luckiest person the day I met you?"
Kyuhyun was speechless, a little embarrassed by Sungmin's cheesiness. Yes, it was cheesy, but he can't deny that it was romantic, too.
Sungmin took his silence as agreement. So, the elder male pressed his lips onto the maknae's slightly opened ones, sealing his words with a kiss. Kyuhyun could feel Sungmin's sincerity through the feel of those luscious lips against his, the warmth of Sungmin's love going straight to his heart.
Kyuhyun was already starting to think that Friday the 13th wasn't so bad after all.
