There is something uniquely satisfying about watching one's clothes steam in front of a fire. It is especially satisfying after one has, say, stepped on what appeared to be a solid section of grass, only to have said grass tilt under you, at which point you realize it's just a mat floating on top of the water, but it's too late to do anything ( Read more... )

And we're back! The camp was not too bad, although I hated it at first. It was not like any camp I've ever been too. There were no cabins or tents or sleeping platforms, just a row of a dozen trailers. It was a little...anticlimactic. I am the only person at the company who writes reports. This means that I spend more time in the office than I did last year, not that I really mind. I don't have to spend every day thrashing through the bush, being eaten by mosquitoes? Joyous! Not joyous: having to talk to one of the provincial archaeologists. Which I had to do today. So, here I am in beautifulPrince George. The move was...okay. I had spent the previous weeks packing up all of my crap, getting rid of what I thought was tons of stuff.( Scenes from a move )

Yesterday was the UASBC's annual shipwreck conference, and a ticket to the event was my birthday present to myself. During the day session, we heard about wet site preservation, the lost communities of Stanley Park, the legacy of the native Hawaiians who settled in BC, and the history of sternwheelers on the Fraser River.

So, I have news.

I got a job.

A real job. A real, archaeology job.

In Prince George.

Which means I'm moving. In like, a month. A month to find a place to live and pack my stuff and organize a yard sale and get rid of unwanted stuff and get up there.

Eek.

Last night was the UASBC's first lecture of the year, and I, feeling bold, decided to go. The lecture was about U-boats, and who doesn't love U-boats?. I hadn't been to the Maritime Museum in ages.
