It's Spring 2003 at Goucher all over again.

So, I stumbled across this.
And I know it has nothing to do with all that shit that's going on at Duke right now, but I can't help but look at that shirt and shudder.

cut for rape triggers
If you don't know about the scandal at Duke, here's a summary: Duke men's lacrosse team throws party at house where 3 of the captains live together and hires two black female strippers as entertainment. The team members say they are on Duke's baseball and track teams, it's a bachelor party, lie about their names, and refer to each other by jersey number to maintain anonymity. During the strippers' routine, one boy says he's going to shove a broom handle up inside one of the m. Women try to leave, boys apologize, women come back. One of the women was taken to the bathroom, held down, and raped by three different members of the team, and robbed. Shortly after the party, an email was sent from one member to another stating:

"tomorrow night, after tonights show, ive decided to have some strippers over to edens 2c. all are welcome . . . however there will be no nudity. i plan on killing the bitches as soon as the walk in and proceding to cut their skin off while cumming in my duke issue spandex . . . all in besides arch and tack please respond"

DNA testing is being conducted on the 46 white members of the 47-member team, as the woman said the rapists were white. In response, Duke sent out obligatory emails to the student body about how the administration is working to protect them blah blah blah, removed the team roster from their website, terminated the season, and the coach has just resigned.
If you want something more thorough, go to The Smoking Gun's website.

A boy from my hometown is on Duke's lacrosse team.

Additionally, a girl on campus was attacked twice, in the same place very recently; the incidents were a week apart. There was no successful sexual assault. Here's a particularly comforting excerpt from an email the universty sent to the campus body:

"Based on evidence gathered at this time, as well as their experience in conducting investigations, University Police believe there is no threat to other students and staff, nor have there been any other reports of assaults of this kind."

That makes me fucking sick.
What do they mean, there have been no similar reports? Why, because only 5% of sexual attacks on college campuses are reported to the police? (Warshaw 1994). Because the student didn't know her attacker, and 77% of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim? (Bureau of Justice Statistics 1997). 1 in 4 college females have been the victims of sexual violence (Warshaw 1994 and 1995 National College Health Risk Behavior Survey).
Pretending it doesn't happen here won't make the problem go away.
