SPN 7x13 "The Slice Girls" rant

Feb 08, 2012 23:12

This is a bit late but better late than never I suppose (plus my slight OCD was also turning my insides to shreds at the fact I was missing this rant in my LJ haha) - Also beware that similarities shall be drawn between Doctor Who and Supernatural throughout this little rant.

So, The Slice Girls! Well, I was excited when I heard Amazons were going to feature in SPN but then when I read the episode synopsis... yeah... not convinced at all. When I watched it though, yes yes yes this is EXACTLY the idea that happened in the Doctor Who episode “The Doctor’s Daughter” where abruptly the Doctor gets a daughter and she backflips and somersaults and is a super fighter and is super sexy and super Mary Sue... *grumbles*

I choose to believe that DW episode doesn’t exist and I was altogether prepared to do the same with this episode however, it wasn’t TOO bad. Definitely not my favourite of all time and has a solid place in my bottom ten SPN episodes due to a horrible premise that I absolutely hate being used in any TV show or movie or wahtever but I guess compared to what I thought, the Slice Girls was not altogether too bad.

Here's my little thoughts;

+ Dean keeping Bobby's flask. I know it was supposed to highlight his extreme drinking again but really, I was kinda touched to see something of Bobby's just pop up like that you know?

+ Dean not caring about the possibility of a case. Wow, I mean... really Dean? You don't think a load of guys having their hands and feet cut off with strange symbols carved into their chest is something up your street? That was weird. Maybe it's supposed to show how single-minded he's been about Dick Roman but that felt extremely off to me.

+ Okay, I love that Sam was so snarky in this episode. He was Mr Snarky again and I loved it.

+ Dean... erm... Dean. He was very, very pretty in this episode. And he didn't have his shirt, that's always a plus! XD

+ The direction in this episode. I'm torn at this one. It was generally alright but all those close up shots of victim's faces and Lydia's face were really distracting to me at times.

+ Emma. My niece is called Emma. This is my own personal beef but everytime they said the word Emma, it felt wrong all over to me. And they really kept hammering home that we should focus on this girl didn’t they? “Eat up Emma”, “Bear the pain, Emma” .... Yes, I get that she's important in this episode.

+ The whole premise of Dean having a daughter. I'm sorry but I have to keep coming back to this. Hated the idea, hated the execution. But to be fair, I did compare her to Jenny in Doctor Who and she definitely wasn’t as annoying as Jenny in Doctor Who so that’s a plus. She was just kinda... bland really. Moving on.

+ Lydia. Hahahaha she was totally blowing Dean off and I laughed at that but seriously, why didn’t Dean go back and gank her?? She had a house and things or was she gone too. I’m guessing she was gone too but IDK.

+ AC/DC - Okay, they’re one of my favourite bands OF ALL TIME but I think that the use of them in this scene was misplaced, not that the lyrics didn’t suit the scene, but the fact is that “You Shook Me All Night Long” was the Season 4 premieres The Road So Far and I literally can’t listen to that song without hearing Dean at the end of it shouting Sam’s name out .... oh dear... my Wincest senses are tingling... MOVING ON!!

+ So they’ve more or less explicitly stated that it’s Bobby’s ghost that’s moving crap around. I’m kinda disappointed in that. I was hoping it would be something more sinister or that it actually turned out to be nothing at all; just, as Sam puts, their wishful thinking. I think it’s much sadder that Bobby’s ghost is still lingering on like that.

+ Lecturer guy. Another Whedonverse alumni on SPN is always welcome and he made me laugh a couple of times, I want him back.

+ Morgue guy. He totally had a guy-crush on Sam. I’m telling you guys, he was like “Back off bitch! This guy’s FBI so show some RESPECT!!” to the Amazon Police lady. Funny funny.

+ Dean’s glee at hearing about the Amazons. Just the way he said “Wonder Woman!?!” like he was expected the princess herself to come strutting in with her leotard and lasso of truth. Damn, that was cute Dean! <3

+ Sam killing Emma. Dude, I loved the real abruptness of the moment. It seemed like it was gonna go on forever and then Sam’s like “Ah fuck this - BANG!!” No hesistance, I loved it. But I was quite confused because it was supposed to be this BIG EMOTIONAL MOMENT and it really wasn’t. Not even a little bit. I mean, at least with the Doctor and Jenny there was a real emotional build-up. With Dean and Emma it just seemed bland. Like, extremely bland. And that’s rare considering how amazing an actor Jensen is but I just didn’t feel anything for that moment other than laughing cos Sam just couldn’t be arsed hearing any more.

+ The end scene between Dean and Sam. Yes, okay, I loved it. Any scene with Dean and Sam I love and yes I felt gutted for Dean in it and I felt a little insulted for Sam in it but it was cute and I do hope Dean doesn’t do something stupid because bad things will happen and, seriously guys, poor Sam is not gonna be able to take no more.

So yeah, kinda boring episode of SPN to be honest. The bits without the Amazons were great but the rest not so much, all in all the premise of it was not something I was ever in favour of so that's probably the biggest factor in my negativeness about this episode.

Well, this weeks episode looks a lot better! I'm rather looking forward to it ^^
