My trip to the Salvation Army Thrift store resulted in some good books.

Some of the local public libraries contain little book shops. Patrons of the library would donate their old books to the library to resale. Persumably, these proceeds would go towards purchasing new books for their general circulation. The South Pasadena Public library has such a store. I've always seemed to find myself in one useless hobby or another. The latest affliction: Book collecting. I typically purchase books with the intention of reading them.
