Today I decided to learn the name of one of the darkest colored Little Golden Mantled Flying Foxes (Pteropus pumilus) that we have at Lubee. His name is Pluto, and he was born on April 19th, 1997. He is almost 11 years old. Bats are among the longest lived mammals relative to their size. Flying foxes can live as long as 20-30 years in captivity. Pluto's mother (dam) is Precy, and his father is not noted. Little golden mantled flying foxes are one of the least social species of bats that we have. Males are prone to squabbling with one another.
Extra Bonus Animal!
I found this American Toad (Bufo americanus) in Pen 1 today. He is one of the greenest toads that I have seen. (This picture was taken with my cell phone, and I think it's better than the shots I took of Percival this morning. Of course, this picture was taken in natural sunlight, and our computer room is somewhat dimly lit.)
