Chapter 12: Part B

Trip to Gwangju - [Part 2]

Jaejoong saw the doors slowly open and squinted to get a better look of the person walking outside, and Jaejoong noticed that it was woman, she looked middle aged, was wearing light pink clothes with a white apron.

She was wiping her hands on her apron as she approached them, with a curious expression on her face, and as she came closer, Jaejoong noticed that she was holding something shiny in one of her hands.

Jaejoong gulped. It was a knife.

Jaejoong scooted closer to Yunho that their arms were now touching, and Yunho looked down at him and gave him a reassuring smile, but still looked a little tensed. Jaejoong looked back at the front of the gates and jumped.

The woman was now in front of them, as she eyed them curiously with suspicion. Jaejoong could’ve sworn that she was just holding a knife a while ago, and somehow it magically disappeared. She looked at him first, looking up and down at him and then she focused her attention on Yunho.

Her eyes were no longer holding any signs of suspicion, but they soften and her lips were trembling, and Jaejoong noticed that her eyes were glistening wet..with tears?

She reached into her apron pocket, Jaejoong moved a little behind Yunho, for the possibility that it could be the knife she was just holding a while ago. But instead she took out a key and unlocked the gates, and pushed them slowly them open.

That’s when Jaejoong saw the woman and knew right away who she was, same dark eyes and the same smile that Yunho had whenever he smiled at him.

She held out her arms and without a word, Yunho leaned in and wrapped his arms around her, and whispered to her words that Jaejoong  heard before.

“Mom, I-I’m home.”

Jaejoong turned away from the touching scene and wished he had a pack of tissues with him right now.

*************************************************************************************

“Mom, this is my friend, Jaejoong. Jaejoong, meet my mom.” Yunho said with a smile, as he introduced them to one another. His mom smiled at Jaejoong and Jaejoong bowed in respect, and at the same time taking her hand.

“Please to meet you, Mrs. Jung, I’m so honored to finally meet you.” Jaejoong said shyly, and then let go of her hand. His mom smiled at Jaejoong and laid a hand on Jaejoong’s shoulder.

“Thank you, Jaejoong-ah, for bringing him home, I swear he’s hardly comes and visits at all.” His mom said shaking her head, as she playfully reached over and pinched his cheek.

“Ow, Mom!” Yunho said, pretending to be hurt and rubbed his cheek, “I’m here, aren’t I?”

“That’s true. Oh! But that reminds me, I haven’t finished making dinner yet, and Jihye-ah and your father will be arriving soon-“ She said as she looked at the clock and was about to go back into the kitchen, but Yunho stopped her.

“Mom, can Jaejoong help? He loves to cook, and trust me, he won’t even come close to burning down your kitchen.” Yunho asked, as he looked at Jaejoong, who still looked shy, but with somewhere in his mind, Yunho had a feeling that Jaejoong was itching to go into their kitchen to cook something.

“That’s a good idea. Jaejoong-ah, want to help me make dinner?” His mom asked as she took out the knife from her apron and gestures toward the kitchen.

“I’d love to help, Mrs. Jung.”

Jaejoong got up from the couch and gave Yunho a small smile before following his mom into the kitchen.

Knowing that they were perfectly occupied in the kitchen, Yunho walked upstairs to the direction of his room. He wondered how much has changed since he left a few years back. As he got up the upstairs hallway, there were childhood pictures of him and Jihye. There were some pictures of his parents, but the walls were mostly covered with pictures of him and Jihye.

He stopped at the door that was close to his, and wondered if it was Jihye’s room. He turned the knob, and switched the lights on. The cloudy wallpaper was no longer there, as the walls were now painted pink. There a mirror, cabinets, and closet, computer and posters of her favorite Kpop stars, and to his surprise there weren’t any pictures of him.

He frowned and looked at the pictures by her dressing mirror, it had pictures of her and her friends, their parents, but again, there weren’t any pictures of him. He looked around her room, almost giving up over the possibility that his picture would be anywhere in his room, when he spotted it.

It was by underneath the lampshade by her bed. He walked over and sat on her bed, and took the framed picture in his hand and looked at it. It was the first time he ever received a Christmas gift from her, she had to be around five or six when the picture was taken, and he was in junior high. She was sitting beside him with a smile on her face, and he was smiling as well, with the bambi squished between them.

"Oppa?"

Yunho almost dropped the framed picture, but managed to place it back from where he got it, and turned around slowly.

He was staring at Jihye, and she matured so much. Her hair was no longer short, but now reached over her shoulders. She was still wearing her school uniform and she grew taller, but still short compared to him. Her voice was no longer tiny, but sounded louder, and more mature.

He wanted to say something, but wasn’t sure what to say. He watched as she walked towards him with surprised eyes and finally stood in front of him. Then she smiled at him, and Yunho figured he should say something now, but instead didn’t see this coming.

She slapped him on the face hard, leaving a red mark on his face as he looked at her.

“YAH, Jihye, what the hell-“ Yunho stopped when he noticed that she was no longer smiling, instead she was crying. Then he reached out, ignoring the pain on his cheek, and she stepped into his awaiting arms and held her in his arms.

“I missed you too, Jihye.” Yunho said, patting her back gently, and continued to hug her.

*************************************************************************************

“So that’s how you met my son? My Yunho-ah certainly does know how to make an introduction.” Yunho’s mother said with a laugh as she washed the rest of the vegetables and passed them to Jaejoong who chopped them into small pieces.

Jaejoong laughed along with her as he placed the sliced carrots in the pot and stirred, then went back to the other veggies to chop.

"When Yunho-ah was child, he would be really shy when it comes meeting new people and sometimes hide behind me or his father. But he grew up and changed, from what I’ve seen and heard, he’s very generous and caring when he meets his fans.” She said, and stirred the soup.

“He really is, that’s why he loves having fan meetings regardless of his busy schedule, he’d make time just to greet and meet his fans. He’d also give money away to charities and sometimes help out at donations. When fans buy him expensive things, he’d encourage them to donate to charities and for those who are less unfortunate. Yunho-ah…truly has a big heart.” Jaejoong says with a smile as he finished cutting the veggies and placed them in the soup.

“Jaejoong-ah, you seem to know a lot about my son.” His mom says quietly, “The truth is, after he left to SM, I didn’t think he’d ever come back here again and I felt like I lost a son. But when he came here with you, I was so surprised and so happy to see him again, for a while, I felt a hole in my heart.”

Jaejoong’s eyes widen and then he reached out and placed his hand on her shoulder.

“Mrs. Jung, Yunho-ah has always thought about you, in fact, the reason why he wanted to go to SM and become an artist was because of you!” Jaejoong exclaims and lowered his voice in case Yunho would overhear.

“Yunho-ah told me before that whenever he comes home from school, you’d be dancing or singing in the kitchen, while cooking. He’d watch you and then join you, to the point where dancing became his joy and his passion, and then his goal. If there was one person in his life that he’d think about the most, it’d be you.”

She looked surprised for as moment and then she smiles at him.

“I remember those times, but I didn’t think Yunho-ah would remember them since he was just a child. But it’s good to know that even after what happened in the past, he still thinks about me. Thank you, Jaejoong-ah.”

Jaejoong noticed the similarity of Yunho and his mom’s facial expressions. His smile looked similar like hers, and her eyes would soften whenever she smiled..just like Yunho’s eyes.

“Jaejoong-ah?” She says, turning off the stove as Jaejoong looked down embarrassingly when she noticed him staring at her. “Can you call Yunho-ah down for dinner and I think Jihye is up there as well?”

“Sure, Mrs. Jung.” Jaejoong said quickly as he walked out of the kitchen and walked upstairs, and looked at the shiny picture frames of Yunho and his family.

He stopped at the picture with Yunho and his little sister, Jihye, they looked so much alike, she looked like the female version of Yunho. Jaejoong looked at the family picture, and looked carefully at Yunho’s parents. Yunho definitely looked more like his mother, with the same eyes and smile, and with his father, the tall height and same frowning expression.

Then he heard laughter from the other room, there was light leading in that room. He heard the sound of Yunho’s laughter and someone else’s as well. It was a feminine laugh. Jaejoong carefully tiptoed up the stairs and into the hallway, passed two other rooms and then he stopped at the side of the door and leaned over to listen.

“I can’t believe you still have bambi this whole time, I thought you threw it away, Oppa!”

Jaejoong almost gasped out loud. It was Yunho’s little sister, Jihye! So she was the one that gave the stuffed animal toy that he found underneath Yunho’s bed, when he was cleaning his room.

“Jihye, I couldn’t throw it away, it’s pretty hard too when it has that mushy doeful expression on its face.”

Jihye snorted. “Please, Oppa, it was better than that torn up teddy bear that you used to sleep with.”

Yunho laughed and then he asked in a more serious tone. Jaejoong leaned in to listen; he’s never heard Yunho speak in that serious tone before.

“Jihye, how’s dad doing?” Yunho asked, and the conversation was no longer happy, but solemn and more serious.

Jaejoong wondered what did happen between Yunho and his father. He remembered asking about his family, but he hardly remember Yunho ever talking about him, and just once when he announced that it was his father’s birthday.

“After you left, Dad’s been working at the office late at night and sometimes he doesn’t even come home. Mom’s worried about him too, but he did say that he would be coming home early today.” Jihye said sounding somewhat happy at the end and then continued in a sadder tone, “Only because Mom and I persuaded him about it being his birthday."

He heard Yunho sigh and then he heard the bed creak, it sounded like Yunho was getting up. Jaejoong bit his lip and wondered if he should just pretend that he stopped by. He didn’t want Yunho to know that he was eavesdropping on the conversation, but for some reason, hearing parts of the story made his heart ache.

He hugged his knees to his chest and rested his chin on top. What could Yunho have done to make his father act this way? Yunho cared about his family and only left because he wanted to make his dreams come true, not because he hated them or wanted to abandon them.

He got up slowly and peeked as Yunho was leaning over a booklet and reading to Jihye, who was nodding and writing something down in her notebook. Yunho said something and laughed, and pretty soon Jihye joined as well.

“Jaejoong-ah, Yunho-ah and Jihye-ah, come down and eat!” Yunho’s mom yelled out and Jaejoong froze. Did she just call out his name?

“Mom, I’ll scoop the rice!” Jihye suddenly came out of the room and ran downstairs, without looking at Jaejoong’s direction.

He peeked inside the room, to see if Yunho was still occupied in the room. For some reason, Yunho miraculously disappeared. Jaejoong walked in and scratched his head in confusion, wasn’t Yunho just here a while ago?

As he turned to go, he gulped as he found himself face to face with Yunho’s chest.

“Er..um excuse me, Yunho-ah.” Jaejoong said trying to move around Yunho, but Yunho mimicked his movements as well, trapping Jaejoong against the wall.

Jaejoong flushed with realization of how close he was to Yunho and tried pushing Yunho away, but Yunho stubbornly stood there and wouldn’t budge. Jaejoong innocently looked up, but Yunho wasn’t frowning, instead he had this smirk on his face.

Seconds later, Jaejoong found himself thrown over Yunho’s shoulder, and he thumped his hands against Yunho’s back.

“Yah, Yunho-ah, put me down!” Jaejoong pleaded, but Yunho continued walking down the hallway with Jaejoong pounding on his back. Yunho finally placed Jaejoong down when they got down to the end of the stairs.

“Eavesdropping is not a good habit, Jae.” Yunho said, pinching Jaejoong’s cheeks playfully and Jaejoong pouted, trying to swat his hands away.

Before he could protest, Yunho wrapped his arms around Jaejoong and rested his chin on top of Jaejoong’s head and whispered softly.

“Thanks for bringing me home, Jae.”

Then he pulled back, and smiled like he always did, leaving Jaejoong somewhat lost for words.

Without a word, except for that stupid pang in his chest again , he followed Yunho into the kitchen, where his family was waiting for them.

*************************************************************************************

Dinner went by quickly and was delicious. Jaejoong finally met Jihye and listened in on Yunho’s embarrassing moments when he was a child. Yunho’s mom made yummy kimchi stew and other delicacies that Jaejoong has never tasted before. Unfortunately, Yunho’s dad had to stay at the office again due to an important case that he took over at the last minute.

But things went by fine, as Jaejoong volunteered to wash dishes with Yunho’s mom, while Jihye and Yunho helped cleared the table. Then they sat down in the living room and looked over baby pictures of Yunho and Jihye, but the main focus was Yunho. He’s never seen Yunho’s childhood pictures before, and he looked so adorable.

He’s never seen Yunho laugh and smile so much before, and whenever he met his eye, he’d smile and Jaejoong would have a hard time remembering what he was laughing about before.

Pretty soon, it was already time to go and Jaejoong called for a cab on his phone, while Yunho went and said his goodbyes to his mom and Jihye.

“Promise to call and visit on the holidays, or whenever you’re free.” Yunho’s mom said, as she gave him a big hug and Yunho closed his eyes for a moment and hugged her back before pulling away.

“I promise, Mom, I’ll be back soon.” Yunho said with a smile and then turned and hugged Jihye.

“Oppa, thanks for coming back.” Jihye said softly and then Yunho pulled away, “Don’t forget, you promised to get me
Super Junior’s autographs.” Yunho chuckled and nodded.

“A promise is a promise, Jihye, I’ll send it in the mail.” Yunho said and then he gestured Jaejoong to come over.

Jaejoong walked over shyly as Yunho gently tugged his hand till Jaejoong stood right in front of them.

Yunho cleared his throat, “I’ll go outside and see if the cab is here.” He smiled at them, gave a small wave and walked out the door. Jihye hugged Jaejoong quickly and followed her big brother out the door.

Jaejoong went over and bowed to Yunho’s mom. When Jaejoong looked up, she had tears in her eyes. Without a word, she hugged Jaejoong, and Jaejoong hugged her back, she pulled away and wiped her tears and looked at him.

“Thank you for bringing Yunho-ah home, Jaejoong-ah. I know that Yunho-ah didn’t want to come home because of what happened before, but somehow whatever you did, he miraculously came home. And he changed, to tell you the truth; I’ve never seen Yunho laugh so much like now. I was afraid that he’d look down on us, but it’s good to know that he has a good friend like you, Jaejoong-ah.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Jung. But it’s because of your love and strength that Yunho-ah is where he is today. I---

“Jaejoong-oppa, taxi’s here!” Jihye yelled interrupting what Jaejoong wanted to say, and bowed once more at Yunho’s mom and she smiled and said “Take care of Yunho-ah, for me, Jaejoong-ah.”

Jaejoong thanked her again and watched as Yunho hugged them one last time, before walking beside Jaejoong to the taxi. Jaejoong went in first and Yunho followed, waving his mom and Jihye, and then sat beside Jaejoong, slamming the door shut on his side.

The taxi started to move and the only sounds were the clicks of the seatbelts, and Jaejoong looked at Yunho, who was looking at his neighborhood through the view of his window.

Jaejoong looked at the time at the driver’s radio, it was already 10 in the evening. Well , he had plenty of time before Yoochun came home, followed by Junsu and Changmin. Luckily, he called them ahead of time or Yoochun would’ve made some excuse to come home early.

He closed his eyes tiredly and leaned against Yunho’s shoulder, and dozed off to sleep.

*************************************************************************************

Yunho watched Jaejoong sleep the whole ride to the airport, and gently shook him awake when it was time to hurry and catch their flight.

Jaejoong yawned sleepily and Yunho helped Jaejoong up, and his beanie came off. They had at least fifteen minutes to catch the plane, and he just stuffed Jaejoong’s beanie in his jacket pocket. He placed his shades on Jaejoong, to hide the fact that he was half asleep.

Jaejoong’s long hair trailed down his shoulders, and Jaejoong was still in a sleepy mode, so Yunho held onto Jaejoong’s hand as they stepped inside the airport.

Out of nowhere, there were loud screams and Yunho could almost swear that the ground started moving. He look around and everyone was looking at him, wait, he was wearing regular clothes so how could they spot him?

Then he realized that he was no longer wearing his shades. Then he heard chants of his name and saw people running from all directions. He tugged Jaejoong forward, who was still not aware of what was going on, especially with the loud noise.

“Yunho-oppa!!!!!“ Girls were screaming and taking out their phones and taking pictures of him.  Thankfully, out of nowhere, security came to the rescue once again.

“Is that his girlfriend?”

“Who’s that girl?”

“Why is he holding her hand?”

People were yelling back and forth at him or at each other, his manager was going to give him hell for this tomorrow, he was sure of it. Within a few seconds, the media was also there. Oh yeah, he was going to be in deep trouble tomorrow.

“Yunho-ah, is she your girlfriend?” One the media reporters yelled over the loud screaming and yelling of fans.

Yunho just smiled, waved his fans off and tugged Jaejoong forward, as they stepped into the airline gates. He could just imagine the look on his manager’s face tomorrow.

Yunho let go of Jaejoong’s hand as they sat in their seats, and ignored the stares by the other people who were looking at them.

“Yunn…what’s going on?” Jaejoong asked sleepily, Yunho’s shades were slipping off of Jaejoong’s nose and Yunho pushed them back.

“It’s nothing, just go sleep, Jae.” Yunho said reassuringly as he took off his jacket and placed over him. Jaejoong mumbled something and then dozed off again , his head leaning against Yunho’s shoulder.

His phone started vibrated, and Yunho didn’t have to guess who it was. He turned it off and took out his iPod, and played the song that Jaejoong sang for the audition, and closed his eyes.

He felt like nothing else mattered right now, except his time with Jaejoong.

*************************************************************************************

“Yunho-ah, are you sure you’re okay?” Jaejoong said as they were now in Yunho’s car, and was still reaching over and checking to make sure Yunho wasn’t hurt anywhere.

"It’s okay, Jae, what matters is that you’re okay.” Yunho said, patting Jaejoong’s hands and continued driving down the road.

But Jaejoong couldn’t help but worry especially after what happened in the airport again. The moment that Jaejoong and Yunho went out, they were suddenly surrounded by fans and some didn’t really like him, and Yunho had to step in and shield him from getting hit with crumbled papers or something.

He still didn’t understand why they started throwing stuff at him, but Yunho just protected him, using his body to protect him from getting hurt. Jaejoong bit his lip and pouted, did he do something wrong?

“Jae, hey..don’t cry.” Yunho said gently as he brushed his tears away with his fingers and then pushed Jaejoong’s chin up so that he was looking at him.

He bit his lip hard, he couldn't help it. Yunho got hurt again because of him, how else was he suppose to react?

“It’s just a misunderstanding; they weren’t targeting you, but me.” Yunho said, taking his shades off of Jaejoong and brushing Jaejoong’s long hair from his tear-streaked face.

To his surprise, they were already parked by Jaejoong’s apartment. He looked back at Yunho again and he reached out and wiped Jaejoong’s tears away, then pinched his cheeks.

“YAH, Yunho-ah, that’s hurts!” Jaejoong said, flushing a bit and rubbing his cheeks. Yunho ruffled his long hair and smiled at him.

“There, that’s the Jaejoong, I want to see okay?” Jaejoong’s eyes widen and Yunho just smiled at him. “It’s getting late, Jae, and we have trainee practice tomorrow remember?”

Jaejoong almost forgot about that. He was spending so much time with Yunho that trainee practice wasn’t in his mind at all. He pouted, it was midnight right now, and he had only couple of hours to sleep before he steps into SM entertainment again.

“Yeah, you’re right, Yunho-ah.” Jaejoong said disappointingly and now looking glum, the day was over so fast. Then he found himself in Yunho’s arms again, that he could smell the faint cologne that Yunho put on hours ago and the strange pang in his chest was back again.

“Thank you for spending the weekend with me, Jae. ” Yunho said before pulling away as he stared straight into Jaejoong’s eyes.

Jaejoong flushed wordlessly and nodded, as he stepped out the car, and slamming the door gently behind him.

Yunho waited until he was inside, and then he drove away. Jaejoong stepped into the apartment and locked the door behind him.

He went straight to his bed, sat by the window and pulled the blinds up, as the SM building was shining and he could see it clearly, and imagined himself dancing with Yunho and him teaching new moves.

He felt a little chilly, hugged his jacket close to him and it smelled just like Yunho…

Within a few minutes, he fell asleep, staring at the SM building and dreamed about him and Yunho, a dream that Yoochun could never wake him from even if he tried….

*************************************************************************************

On the ride home, Yunho was frowning.

After visiting his family, he was really happy. Even though he didn’t see his dad, at least he was able to reconnect back with his mom and Jihye. The truth is he didn’t have the courage to visit them, but somehow when Jaejoong asked to go with him, he felt like he could and he did.

Everything was fine until his fans went too crazy, he’s used to them screaming and cheering when he’s passing by and going back and forth on trips to concerts etc, but he never expected them to be this cruel.

Well most of it was his fault, because he didn’t conceal Jaejoong’s long hair and the shades on him really did make him look like a girl, and the fact that they were holding hands (only because Jaejoong was still half asleep) seemed to spark a riot with his fans. Throwing things at him would’ve been fine, but throwing them at Jaejoong really pissed him off. Then seeing Jaejoong cry like that for him was driving him crazy, he told himself that he wasn’t going to make Jaejoong cry again like before and yet he did, again.

Some friend he was.

He parked his car by the gates and opened the gates and locked it behind him. He walked into his apartment and locked the door behind him. He threw his keys on the counter and went upstairs to change and go to sleep. He placed his sports bag down by his bed and fell face first into his bed.

It smelled like Jaejoong. He reached into his jacket pocket and felt something soft.

He took it out, it was Jaejoong’s beanie. He chuckled to himself, as it brought back memories of when he first met Jaejoong and mistaken him to be a girl.

He placed Jaejoong’s beanie on top of his pillow and snuggled into the warmth, and fell asleep to Jaejoong’s lingering scent.
