Chapter 13 :
Nightmares
He didn’t want to go.
He got a call from one of the SM people that a driver was going to come pick up him and Yoochun around eight in the morning, and for some reason he woke up two hours earlier. He sighed; maybe it had to do with the nightmare that he woke up from.
Jaejoong splashed water on his face, desperate to wash away the tears that were flowing down his face when he woke up from that nightmare. He turned the water off and looked up into the mirror, his eyes were still looking puffy and red. He grabbed his towel and began to dry his face with it, while thinking about that nightmare.
He had a really good dream about Yunho, and how they were having so much fun, then for some reason, the dream turned into a nightmare. It brought him back to the airport scene, but this time he wasn't with Yunho. He was by himself, as the people continued throwing stuff at him and crowded him that he couldn't breathe anymore.
He placed the towel down and looked at the clock, above the door. It was nearly four in the morning. He only had four hours of sleep and had three hours left till he had to go to SM for trainee practice. Then he woke up sweating and tears were trailing down his cheeks, and he just couldn’t go back to sleep.
He didn’t want to wake up Yoochun, who came home really late and fell asleep the moment he fell on his bed. He sat by the corner of the door and hugged his knees to his chest, resting his chin on his knees.
Yunho got hurt again. Jaejoong didn’t understand how he managed to smile through all that and still tell him that it wasn’t his fault. If he went back to SM today, what if those fans were there again, did that mean that Yunho has to step in again and protect him? He couldn’t bear it if anything happened to Yunho.
But he wanted to see Yunho again. He wanted him at his side, ruffling his hair like he always did and telling him that everything is going to be okay.
He had to protect him even if it meant staying away from him.
“Mmm..Hyung, you still in there?” Yoochun asked sleepily, knocking the bathroom door lightly.
“U-um just give me a minute, Yoochun-ah.” He said, as he stood up, walked over to the sink and looked at the mirror. To his surprise, he was crying again. He wiped it quickly with the back of his hand and tried to smile, it was a tired smile, hopefully Yoochun wouldn’t notice.
“Ok, go right on ahead, Yoochun-ah.” Jaejoong said as he opened the door for him and walked past Yoochun quickly to the kitchen to make breakfast.
“Thanks, Hyung.” Yoochun mumbled as he went in the bathroom and closed the door behind him.
Jaejoong wanted to go back to sleep, but he knew that he’d be lying awake just thinking about Yunho, and the thought of getting the same nightmare wouldn’t help either. He switched on the light in the kitchen and decided to make coffee.
An hour and thirty minutes till they have to go back SM and Jaejoong would have to face him again.
*******************************************************
”Mom, it’s okay, we’re okay, yes, Jaejoong is fine.” Yunho replied with his phone to his ear, while tying his shoes. He finished exercising and was getting ready for the drive to SM. He had his papers done and read, memorizing his trainees’ names and the techniques he was going to teach them. Then out of the blue, he turns on his phone and he has 31 missed calls. To his surprise, besides his manager, most of them came from his mom.
“No, no, the stone-throwing didn’t happen, they were just crumbled paper.” Yunho said frowning, remembering that incident and the time he had to protect Jaejoong from getting mobbed by his “fans”.
Even though he didn’t want to think about, he just couldn’t look at Jaejoong’s hurt expression. He’d protect Jaejoong at all cost, he brought him back with his family and he was his first real best friend.
“Yeah, Mom..oh hey, Jihye, no, don’t bring too much attention to the family. You have no idea what the media can do, sometimes they can twist your words around, just take of yourself, and watch over mom and dad. “ Yunho said, "Jaejoong is fine and I'll tell him you said hi...ok..bye.
Yunho hanged up and placed his phone in his pocket. Since he still had some time left, he decided to do something that he hasn’t done in long time, watch television.
He grabbed the remote on the coffee table and pressed the on button. What a huge mistake that was.
“Breaking news! Fans attack SM superstar, Jung Yunho and a mysterious woman. Many believe that it could possibly---“
Yunho frowned and changed the channel.
“Who exactly was this woman that SM star, Yunho was arriving at the airport with? Rumors with fans and others that she might be his secret girlfriend---“
Is this what news was about nowadays? Whatever happened to talking about the economy or the crimes going on? Yunho thought to himself as he shook his head and changed the channel yet again.
“Approximately twelve midnight in Seoul, Jung Yunho and a woman walked into the airport, holding hands and mob of fans attacked the woman as Yunho bravely protected her. Who is this mysterious woman? Could she really be-as rumors say-be the SM star, Jung Yunho’s secret girlfriend? Here is the a fancam of the surprising yet violent incident---”
“Security in the airport has increased due to fans wanting to see their favorite idols. An example would be what happened at Seoul airport when SM star, Jung Yunho and an unidentified woman were attacked by fans after arriving from Gwanji airlines-“
“SHIT!” Yunho said, as he turned off the tv and threw the remote on his side of the couch. What the hell was going on here? Who knew the media could be so damn nosy? With the way things were going, he could only imagine how much trouble he was in.
But the one thing that bothered him the most was the hurt expression on Jaejoong’s face and how that strange pang came back again just thinking about it.
He grabbed his keys from the counter, carried the folder in one hand as he stepped out of the apartment. He locked the gates behind him, and rushed to his car.
The only thing he had to do right now is make it to SM and to Jaejoong, before anyone else could.
************************************************************
“Hyung, what’s taking you so long? The van just pulled up!” Yoochun said, pounding on the bathroom door yet again.
Jaejoong placed his glasses on and placed Yoochun’s hat on since he had no idea where his beanie was at. He looked at himself in the mirror, his eyes were no longer red, but somewhat pink. He straightened his black shirt and jogging pants, overall he looked okay. He didn’t look like a guy who just finished crying after having a horrible nightmare. He just looked casual, yet somewhat tired.
“I think there are people in the car other than the driver.” Yoochun muttered as Jaejoong stepped out the bathroom.
“Let’s go, Yoochun-ah.” Jaejoong said, as Yoochun locked the windows and pulled the blinds down.
“Right behind you, Hyung.” Yoochun replied as he followed Jaejoong outside, and locks the door behind him.
Jaejoong’s eyes widened, in front of them was a black GMC van, the same ones, the other SM artists came in to SM. Yoochun looked surprised as well, and just stood there.
Suddenly the car door opened, followed by a loud bickering and an EU KYANG KYANG.
“Jaejoong-hyung! Yoochun-ah!” Jaejoong found himself smiling when he saw his new friends sitting down and waving them to come over.
Junsu was casually dressed as well, wearing his gray jogging clothes as well and a white hoodie. Changmin was also casually dressed, with a brown sweater on. Jaejoong smiled at them as he sat at an empty chair beside Changmin and Yoochun sat on the empty chair beside Junsu.
Jaejoong slammed the car door shut, and driver continued to drive.
Jaejoong closed his eyes as he listened into his friends’ conversation with one another. Junsu talked winning the game and how he felt sore all over. Changmin talked about the colleges and how he’d like to go there someday. Yoochun talked about his family and the gelato restaurant that his little brother was working at and the new dog. Then somehow it lead to Junsu and Changmin bickering over sports vs. education, and Yoochun was laughing.
Jaejoong politely asked the driver to turn on the radio, maybe a little music would brighten the day a little, and make him feel hyper rather than feeling tired.
The driver turned it on to some random station and one of Super Junior’s songs came in, Junsu seemed to know it as he sang along with the lyrics. Junsu was singing along, while Changmin decided to talk about his college-hunting experience with Yoochun.
The song stopped, as the radio DJ began to talk.
“Morning, Seoul, Korea! Well, turns out there’s breaking news concerning famous SM idol, Jung Yunho and a mysterious woman -“
Upon hearing, Yunho’s name, he tried to reach over to turn it off, but Junsu stopped him.
“Wait, hyung, it has to do with Yunho-hyung.” Junsu protested and he pulled Jaejoong’s hand away from the radio.
“Yeah, don’t you want to hear about it, Jaejoong-hyung?” Yoochun asked, as he and Changmin leaned in to listen some more.
Jaejoong sighed and leaned against his seat.
“They arrived at the airport, and fans recognized him immediately without concealing his face, and with casual clothes on, a mob of fans stopped the star at his tracks. Supposedly reports say that the woman and him were holding hands, fans grew angry and began to throw things at them. Reports from MNET say that fans were throwing crumbled papers at the woman, and Yunho-sshi stepped in and protected her.”
Jaejoong hoped he wasn’t turning red with guilt at this moment. But the guys seemed too interested with what the DJ had to say, that Jaejoong didn’t think it’d be the right time to even tell them.
“Videos and fancams have been uploaded all over the internet, Yunho-sshi protects the woman, and security came in the nick of time and blocked the mob of fans. The woman that Yunho-sshi was with hasn’t been identified and SM fails to comment. Hopefully, we’ll get some coverage today with what’s going on. Stay tune for more, Kpop listeners!”
The DJ switched to commercial break, and Jaejoong sighed, and pretended to look surprised.
“Wow, poor Yunho-hyung, but I feel even sadder for the woman he was with. Pretty harsh of what those fans did.” Junsu said.
“Some fans, if they were fans, why would they harm Yunho-hyung’s friend or whoever that woman was. It seems to me like they’re showing their true colors, instead of cheering that Yunho-hyung came back, they showed anger, selfishness and maybe even jealously.” Changmin said in a stern tone, as Junsu and Yoochun nodded in agreement.
“Even though, he’s a guy, he has feelings as well. It must’ve made him sad and even angry that his so called fans would even do that. I hope they’re alright. What about you, Jaejoong-hyung? What do you think about Yunho-hyung’s situation?” Yoochun asked, leaning over to poke Jaejoong’s shoulder.
“I’m just glad that Yunho-ah wasn’t hurt.” Jaejoong said softly as the car pulled into the SM driveway, and then there were loud screams.
Junsu and Changmin glanced at each other and looked through the car window, Yoochun looked out as well. Jaejoong looked and saw that large crowds of fans were by the building and were chanting Yunho’s name and some were really happy as others had this glum look on their faces. Luckily he had on Yunho’s shades when they were at the airport, that way they would’ve have noticed him.
Bodyguards came out of the building and surrounded the van immediately as the boys walked out, fans weren’t aware of who they were so they turned and looked at the direction that Yunho was usually coming from. Jaejoong and them stepped into the building, the secretary greeted them and they were told to go into the trainee rooms and wait for Yunho there.
Some of the SM officials weren’t too happy with the massive crowd outside the building and were discussing if they should call the police and many just sipped their cup of coffee and watched in amusement of the fans chanting Yunho’s name.
“Man, I just hope Yunho-hyung and that woman are alright, those fans freak me out.” Junsu said, shaking his head and crossing his arms as they were in the elevator .
“That was really scary, those fans look like they want to kill someone, hopefully it’s not Yunho-hyung.” Yoochun said, in a surprised tone.
Changmin nodded in agreement, and Jaejoong felt a bit queasy. He felt like he should do something, what if Yunho came out of his van and they go after him? They looked really angry, if they found out that he that “girl”, would they go after him instead, and leave Yunho alone?
“Hyung, you look sort of pale.” Yoochun said in concern. Junsu and Changmin looked at him and their eyes were filled with concern as well.
“It’s okay, Hyung, Yunho-hyung is fine. “ Changmin said, placing a hand on Jaejoong’s shoulder and giving him a squeeze before letting go. Junsu patted his back, and Jaejoong felt some comfort from his friends.
But that wasn’t enough.
The elevators opened and they stepped out and looked up, and saw that Yunho’s manager was pacing back and forth with this frustrated look on his face. He looked out at the large window and pulled out his phone, with this scowl on his face.
“Yunho-ah, do you have any idea how much trouble you’ve caused?” He yelled in an angry tone, as he continued pacing back and forth.
“Yunho-ah, you were suppose be at home resting, not going out on an adventure with your girlfriend! ” He yelled, and then paused for a moment.
“Look, explain to me later okay? I have another meeting to attend too, and sometime today we’ll release a public statement about the situation, alright?” He said, in a much calmer tone and looked up in surprised when he realized that they were all staring at him.
“Excuse us, Hyung, we’ll go to the dance room right now.” Jaejoong said, bowing and pulling his friends alongside him.
“Hold on, Jaejoong-ah.” Yunho’s manager said, stopping Jaejoong on his tracks, and looked at the other guys, “You guys go on ahead, I just need a quick word with Jaejoong-ah.”
They looked at Jaejoong for a minute and bowed, Changmin, tugging his older hyungs by the hand, as they stared back at Jaejoong and the manager back and forth.
Then they were alone and loud music could now be heard in the dancing room, Jaejoong looked down, avoiding the manager’s piercing stare, and the manger finally spoke.
“Jaejoong-ah, I need you present when I release the statement, understand?” He said, with a stern tone and in a commanding gaze.
“Is Yunho-ah going to be there as well?” Jaejoong asked quietly, and looked up to find the manger glaring at him.
“Of course, not! You think I want Yunho-ah present so that the media can rip him apart? His reputation is too important for that, a trainee like you, Jaejoong-ah, is less important to the level that Yunho is at right now. His manager said and continued,” You were there with him, dragging him off his ass to visit the family that only care for him now because he’s rich and famous, you were the source of trouble, Jaejoong-ah!”
Jaejoong felt like those words were stabbing him straight in the heart, it was true that he could never be at the star level like Yunho, but the manager didn’t understand a single thing in Yunho’s life. His family meant the world to him than fame and money combined.
“You don’t know a single shit about Yunho-ah. His family is everything to him, maybe if you weren’t so interested in trying to get him so famous all the time and got to know the real him then maybe you’d know the kind of person that Yunho-ah is. But instead you get him to do so much work that he doesn’t even have time to himself and time to see the family that missed him so much, you’re just a selfish, greedy bastard that wants more and more-“ Jaejoong said now angry and found himself being shoved against the wall and Yunho’s manager was turning into an angry shade of purple.
“You know what, Jaejoong-ah? I knew from the moment I shoved you off Yunho-ah that day, that you were going to be a source of trouble to him. With my connections with the CEO of SM, I can easily persuade him to remove you off of SM’s trainee academy.” He threatened as he poked Jaejoong hard on the chest, his glasses fell off and the manager smashed it with his foot.
Jaejoong didn’t say anything, and clenched and unclenched his fist.
“You think I give a fuck of what Yunho-ah wants? This is entertainment, his main job is to entertain, and my main job is to keep him in check with that. In other words, without me, there’s no SM superstar, Jung Yunho. Understand?” He said, as Jaejoong continued glaring at him, he could feel his blood boiling as he clenched his fingers, in a position of a fist.
Selfish Bastard. This manager didn’t know a single thing about Yunho, he only knew the Super star Jung Yunho, but he didn’t Yunho from the heart. He didn’t know that Yunho missed his family, he didn’t know that instead of going out and perform, all Yunho wanted was to have a fan meeting to have a chance to meet and greet his fans and thank them for supporting him. He didn’t know that Yunho’s favorite food was kimchi stew or the fact when Yunho smiled, it’s like the whole room lit up. One thing that manager didn’t understand was Yunho’s heart.
Before Jaejoong could raise his fist and smash it against the manager’s face, there was a loud crash.
“Get the fuck off him.”
Jaejoong felt that strange pang in his heart once again when he heard his voice.
He was standing there, his dark eyes were blazing in anger with a tight clenched fist as he glared at the person on the ground with an angry scowl on his face. Fury was written all over his face.
He looked down on the ground and saw that the manager that was once in front of him threatening to kick him out of SM ,was down on the ground, holding his hand to his now swollen eye.
************************************************************
“Yunho-ah, what the hell-“
Yunho was going to tear his heart out, he told him on the phone that he was going to deal with it and to leave Jaejoong out of it, and he comes in for his trainee sessions, and sees Jaejoong against and this sonofabitch threatening him and saying that he made him who he was today. He knew nothing about him after all.
He stood over him and stared at the man who he admired the most throughout his career. The man who showed and taught him the basics of the entertainment world, and who he thought was also his friend. He was the first person to make him feel welcome and suited for the entertainment world, but it was nothing but a bunch of lies, because all it was worth for that man was money.
He was tired of his manger’s shit and now he was going to kill him.
“Yunho-ah, wait, I was just angry!” His manager said, as Yunho clenched his fingers into a fist and was about to give him about blue eye, but something was pulling him back.
“Don’t, Yunho-ah. Please.” Jaejoong said with this sad expression on his face, as he placed his warm hand over Yunho’s and squeezed it. “It’s not worth it..he's not worth it."
But to me, you are.
He could see that Jaejoong looked tired, and noticed small black bags under his eyes. What happened to him? Seeing Jaejoong look like that instantly changed his mood from angry to concern, he took a deep breath and Jaejoong helped him up.
He walked over to the intercom by the elevator and pressed the button.
“This is Yunho and I need security, please. Trainee floor.”
************************************************************
Seconds after the intercom, security reached the floor and picked up the manager, who refused to get out, but security handled him well.
"Anything else, Yunho-sshi?" The last remaining security guard asked him, as the others waited, holding his "manager" in custody.
"Just get him the hell out of my sight." Yunho said, as the guard bowed before walking into the elevator with the others.
His "manager" yelled at them, as he tried to pull away from the security guard. "You'll be sorry, you little--------"
Yunho smirked and flipped him off, as he walked over to Jaejoong, who was standing by the corner of the room and staring out the window.
For once, he just didn't know what to do. He couldn't go back into time and stop those "fans" from hurting Jaejoong and him like that, just like now, he wished he could go back into time and protect Jaejoong from getting hurt. It seemed like he was the reason for why Jaejoong was getting hurt, he wanted to let it go and make everything seem okay. But in the back of his mind, he couldn't let anything like this go..including to someone that he just started caring about.
"Yunho...?"
He looked at Jaejoong, he could still see the red scratch marks that man left on him. Clenching his fist, dammnit he wanted to sock something. He walked closer to him till they were only a few breaths apart and he could see the small, dark bags under Jaejoong's eyes..and his eyes were somewhat..red? Was he crying--?
Without a word, he pulled him in his arms again, just like he did when Jaejoong cried before. But this time, this hug wasn't just for comforting Jaejoong, it was also for himself.
“I’m sorry, Jae.” He whispered softly as he bend over and pressing his face on top Jaejoong’s shoulder, “I wanted to beat the living crap out of him, Jae, and if you weren’t pulling me back, I could’ve thrown him out that window.”
Jaejoong could feel that Yunho was shaking and he pulled him closer, as he ran his fingers through his hair, trying to comfort him. He felt so tired that day, but somehow seeing Yunho, and being close to him like this, he didn’t ever want to feel tired for this.
Yunho pulled away gently and placed his hands on his shoulders.
"Jae, you’re crying again..” Yunho hated seeing Jaejoong’s tears because something inside him felt like breaking. He didn’t have a weakness for tears, but just seeing Jaejoong like that, it definitely got to him.
“No, I’m just happy. I’m happy that you came, Yunho-ah.” Jaejoong said softly, as he smiled, and Yunho reached over and brushed those tears away with his fingers.
Strangely, his heart made a small flip. The truth was he wanted to see him as well, and if he didn’t see him, he’d go crazy. He’s told things to Jaejoong that he’s never told anyone, he’s opened up who he was rather than the infamous Jung Yunho, and more importantly, he trusted him with everything he had. If there was anyone besides his family who knew his true self, it’d be Jaejoong.
He ruffled Jaejoong’s hair, and looked straight into his dark, wet eyes.
“We’ll get through this okay? Leave the situation to me, I’ll release a statement myself and this whole thing can finally be laid to rest. You’ll be by my side, right?” Yunho asked him, with a small smile on his face.
“Of course, Yunho-ah. You can always count on me.” Jaejoong said, with a smile, a smile that made Yunho get distracted and forget what the heck he was talking about.
Yunho cleared his throat and walked to the front of the stairs, stretching out a hand towards Jaejoong’s direction. The loud music could still be heard from the room, and he could’ve sworn he heard Junsu’s EU KYANG KYANG.
“You coming, Jae?”
Jaejoong brushed his eyes from any traces of tears, walked over to where Yunho was waiting and without hesitation, placed his hand on Yunho’s hand, and with that they walked upstairs together.
************************************************************
“Jaejoong, I’ll protect you.”
Yunho said as they walked down the hall, with loud music being played at the end of the hallway.
“Did you say something, Yunho-ah?” Jaejoong yelled, as he looked at Yunho.
Yunho shook his head and mouthed “Nothing” to him, as Jaejoong gave him a confused look, and Yunho reached over, ruffled his hair and walked ahead of him.
Jaejoong caught up to him, and their hands kept bumping against one another. Yunho sighed and held onto Jaejoong’s hand.
Jaejoong didn't seem to take notice, that or he didn't seem to mind them holding hands, as he talked about Junsu's soccer competition, Changmin's numerous college tours and Yoochun's trip with his family. He noticed that Jaejoong was no longer looking pale and had that weird pink color back on his cheeks, and his smile was back.
He'd do anything to protect that smile.
"Yunho-ah...are you listening to me?"
Yunho smiled at Jaejoong and tugged him forward. "Yup, so what were you saying about Yoochun's brother's new job?"
Jaejoong continued his story with a smile on his face as they walked closer to the trainee rooms.
He could hear someone playing the piano..probably Yoochun and someone scolding the other on a dance move, probably Junsu and Changmin. He shook his head and stared at their hands,it didn't feel awkward to him, since close friends can do this anyways.
But he felt something else, something..stronger and something that he feared.
He felt that if he didn’t hold onto Jaejoong, he’d lose him and he’d do just about anything to make sure that never happens.
He was sure that if he lost Jaejoong, he’d lose himself as well.
