I bought a garam masala truffle from a very hot Japanese guy at the handicraft market at Chionji on Monday. It was really good.
I went to a moonviewing party back in October or so and finally wrote a haiku that got into the top 5. A woman had played a gold-stringed harp for us during dinner before the haiku-writing started up. So i looked up "string" in my dictionary to make sure i used the right word for instrument strings, and discovered that the same word is used in the "waning moon." Coincidentally, we were holding our party on the 3rd waning night of the moon, rather than the full moon itself. So this was my haiku:
金の弦 (kin no gen = gold strings)
心広がる (kokoro hirogaru = the heart is opened up)
下弦の月 (kagen no tsuki = the waning moon)
Parallellism is fun!
Kyoto mountains make some really pretty fall colors. Lots of the streets of Kyoto are lined with Gingko trees, which turn a lovely yellow color, once they are done dropping stinky fruits on the pavement. But the Kyoto city works every year go around chopping off the limbs of all the street-lining trees... i've heard something about it being to keep the storm drains from getting clogged with fallen leaves. Whatever the reason, they did MY block first... giving me a taste of the barren winter landscape, weeks before getting around to other streets in the area. WTH?
Work is fun and easy. I expect to stay there next year.
I made some pies with
richandfamous a couple weeks ago. It was fun, and they were tasty.
I bought a striped turtleneck.
My bike brakes are squeaky, despite the cleaning i did of the rims. They are probably just protesting the cold weather.
My apartment is usually a degree or two colder than outside through the daytime. Thankfully the trend does not continue into the night.
Opening windows in December should not result in a warming of the room... should it? If only it actually worked to warm the room up as far as the outside...
I love kotatsus. And mikan. And persimmons. And wearing socks and a Sandra-knit hat to bed.
Red Cliff was awesome... it sucks that you Amerikkans won't get to see the full two-part movie, as they are squooshing both parts into one feature-length film for the English speaking markets. The reason i read was that non-Asians are less familiar with the story behind it (The Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and would get too confused and require too much explanatory material... or something like that.
Anyway, i'm looking forward to seeing Part Two here in the spring. Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung are hot. And the battles are choreographed so well!
Applesauce in the rice cooker is so easy and good.
I will be in San Francisco from December 24th to January 5th. The NYC portion of my travel plans got cancelled.
I am going to try to convince Stu to have a latke party for Chanuka on Xmas. It will be a good chance to unleash the ricecooker applesauce on others.
I am hoping to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium while i'm in the area, too. And play some pinball.
I expect my last cellphone number to still work, but i will update here or somewhere if i end up having to get a new one again.
