I judged a speech contest a few weeks ago, which was surprisingly fun, partially because there actually weren't that many speeches, it mostly consisted of skits put on by the various classes of a Japanese teacher of English. The whole event was surprisingly well-run and organized, with the children's parents acting as stage crew and holders of scenery, and most of the kids had noticeably put a lot of effort into their performances, with a few disappointing exceptions.

Two especially stood out from the others, the first being a series of three short skits involving Doraemon, basically a magic cat with a plethora of tools that can do anything, although I gather they more often than not end up causing more problems in the course of being used, in the end Doraemon ended up coming across as rather sinister, the monkey's paw wish-granter of children's cartoon characters. Another standout was a re-imagining of Hansel and Gretel, I mean, come on?
Why didn't the kids just use GPS to find their way back home in the original? What, just because it hadn't been invented? Weak, medieval writer guy, it's called "imagination".

Other than that, not so much else is new. Aya finally started graduate school and moved out of her apartment and into the dorm there, which meant that I had the distinct pleasure of helping her move all of her stuff into my apartment for a few days and then help move half of it back out, although that did result in me scoring a fair amount of furniture. Annoyingly her desk is just a hair too small to fit into my extra room, so for the moment it's taking up space in the kitchen of all places.

More updates to follow soon, in all likelihood.
