Reimmersing myself in the world of Modern Israeli Hebrew, I've noticed that English has quite an effect on the language. Okay, technically, it started in December, but so far there have been three turkeys picked by Switzerland, Romania, and Albania. I've said, repeatedly, that translation is just as much of an art as it is a science. It's one thing to directly translate, say, lines of dialogue in a story, sentence for sentence. But does the MEANING remain? What is said is as important as why it is said and what remains unsaid, so indeed, conveying that same "feeling" in another language can ( Read more... )

Today the topic is grammatical gender. If you've ever studied a language like German, Russian, or Spanish, you know about grammatical gender. While, in English, we think of everything as "it" except for living beings (which then become "he" or "she"), in several languages like Spanish your only choices are é and ella, or "he" and "she".
