And in today’s edition of the 30 Women Meme, we have two redheads whose sexual exploits enraged fandom.
GINNY WEASLEY of Harry Potter
“And Ginny, don’t call Ron a prat, you’re not the Captain of this team-“
“Well, you seemed too busy to call him a prat and I thought someone should-“
-Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Ginny is a character who actually benefited greatly in my eyes from fandom - not because I read so much fic that I had a whole new perspective on her character, or because I read lots of good meta, or anything like that; it was more because fandom is such a douchebag about Ginny Weasley that as a result my previously neutral-to-fair opinion of her got pushed more and more into the positive side. That’s right, fandom, every time you call her a Mary Sue, my love for her increases about 5%. The more you say “omg what a stupid slut hdshe have more than one boyfriend in her life omg~”, the more I say YEAH GINNY, GET IT GURL.
Even without that wankery, though, I do like Ginny. She’s a lot like the twins, and I loved Fred and George. I noticed her suddenly start being increasingly awesome in OOTP, even if it didn’t enrage me the way it enraged some people. Rereading the books, I think it’s fair to say that Ginny sort of developed quietly in the background while no one - at least not Harry, and therefore not the narrator - was looking. She stands up to Ron when he tries to slutshame her and she yells at capslock Harry when someone desperately needs to yell at capslock Harry. She grows up surrounded by boys and learns to hold her own. I would never argue that she is Rowling’s best character, but she is pretty cool.
And naturally fandom hates her for dating the hero.
W/e. Four for you, Ginny Weasley. You go, Ginny Weasley.
AMY POND of Doctor Who
"I'm fine. Fine! It's just... there's a whole world in here, just like you said. It's all true. I thought -- well, I started to think that maybe you were just like... a mad man with a box."
Like Ginny, Amy is by no means my favourite female character to come out of her respective canon, but I do like her. The wank over the fact that she’s a kissogram and a ~fallen woman~ was hilarious but at least short-lived, even if Skirt Wank lives on forever more. Amy is a little bit strange and maybe not so great on the one-to-one empathy thing, but she’s brave and quick on the uptake and she can get shit done on her own. She is impulsive and demanding and unabashedly flirtatious whether you like it or not. If you make her wait for twelve years she will hit you with a cricket bat.
I went looking for an Amy Pond vid but all the ones on YouTube sucked.
Here is a link to one I can't embed. Also she was one kick-ass eight-year-old.
ILU, Amelia, and your prayers to Santa. :'D
