You really helped claify what I wasn't understanding about Tumblr communities. There really is no "safe" place there at all then. Hmmm.
Why in the world did fandom make this jump to Tumblr? I was away from fandom for a few years (RL crap) and I come back and it's all over there and I'm just like, "Buh! What happened?!" At first it's fine but I can see how some people who have been there from the start are just so over it.
I think at this point then, my main concern is if there would be any interest. If everyone is over at Tumblr and on their dashes, would they want to take the time to come over here to a comm to see some of the same posts and discussions simply because it was in a better format? There would have to be some kind of unique material to be a catalyst for discussion and to create a sense of community.
Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd be more tempted to keep Chuck 'discussion' posts here and go back to reblogging pretty pictures and other fandoms there. I mean, you can still put artwork, pictures, fan fic, etc, in LJ posts, you just can't reblog anything.
And another upside for me, is that a Chuck-centric comm here would enable me to come in and, say, discuss a really awesome Chaleigh idea I had, or meta about the Hansens, etc, without worrying that the Chuck haters would get hold of it and shred it like they're fond of doing.
Yeah, it's really crazy that some people would be like, "Neato headcanon, let me poop all over it." But that's so true! I guess you could say Tumblr is like the Wild West and everyone has a sixshooter.
I get a sense that Chuck fans are interested in a comm off Tumblr. I don't know any other platform that most of us are on other than LJ, so it seems like it should be here. Haven't seen much mention of dreamwidth.
I think it's reaching a boiling point on tumblr where we've already lost some great people who contributed wonderfully and others are just getting tired of the surprising amount of hate and are looking for alternatives.
I think an RP group I was in awhile ago used something similar for our OOC chat? It was a locked blog, by invitation only, that we could post in so only other people there could see it. Really, though, it wasn't anything more than a group chat basically. It didn't really serve as a blog. Oh, this is driftingwithchuckhanse by the way, haha.

I know you set up the PacRimShifters comm awhile back and didn't know if you had any insight into how hard it is to get people to post. It sounds like you literally have to "invite" everyone and that makes it a ton of work. Also, RPing, I wonder if those types of posts could be included. I know I am missing out on a lot of great "fic" cause I can't keep track of how it's all posted over there.
The one we used to OOC post in our RP group was completely private, which had it's benefits for our use, but I could see being a problem for an actual blog. For one thing, people who weren't in that group couldn't see the posts. To avoid hate, that's great, but any original content would only be viewable by those already there.
PacRim Shifters was an unprotected sideblog. I could invite other people to post to it, but other than that, there was no difference between just a regular blog. Anyone could see the posts, anyone could reblog the posts and add whatever they wanted. Wouldn't really help the lack of hate.
In either case, everyone involved would still have to at least have a main blog. They wouldn't have to post to it, but it'd still have to exist to be part of the group blogs.
Yeah, Jo was saying the same thing. Even communities on Tumblr are unprotected. It's anything goes. And that includes hating on posts that come from a community.
On LJ at least posts in the community, are in the community and if something gets out of hand, it can be squashed.
The more I chat about it, the more I think Chuck fans are interested.
Thank you for chatting about this with me. I'm actually surprised by the reaction my little post has made. People seem really interested in having a 'safe' zone, whatever form that may take. The consensus is definitely that some type of moderation needs to take place.
It would need to be built in a way to foster participation and have unique content as otherwise people will probably default to what we are doing now. So a little thought needs to go into this before it actually launches.
If and when it does, I will gladly take you up on your offer for some comm banners and the like, if you're willing. :)
i have nothing useful to add to this discussion as i have a deep seated hatred of Tumblr- someone, a few years ago, stole a photo of me with someone and used it to post their "post secret". took several days to get it taken down because Tumblr doesn't require or provide easy access to site maintainers. had to go through Tumblr proper and prove that i am me. yuck.
but... i think you should come play at NerdLush.com ;)
not active... though i do occasionally read fics. i'm more in the Arrow fandom right now; though that isn't right, either. i don't think i qualify as active in ANY fandom. i think i just quietly watch from the sidelines these days. haha. but yeah, it's great to see BtVS still so active (and not evil scary like the SPN fandom)
i cannot take credit for the name. LOL. i asked Facebook, and friends named it. i just run it and post and play. :)

Some people in the PR fandom over at Tumblr have concerns and I can't say I blame them. Can you either ease my mind or tell me to run to Dreamwidth?
It seems like the Spike fandom has just rolled with the punches.
