More fun in the Library...

Nov 05, 2004 14:07

After I finished distracting Connor from what I could only assume was much needed research, I kind of wandered the library aimlessly for a while before ending up in the occult section. My sister would just love that. She freaked out every time I so much as glanced at Willow and Tara's magick books curiously ( Read more... )

"Pleasure to meet you." I shook his hand with a bright smile, "I get the distracted thing, don't worry. So I guess it was pretty much inevitable that we ended up crashing into each other when we're both not paying attention to anything around us." I laughed slightly, "And I'm not so much into the creepies and crawlies, really, as much as accepting them as a fact of life. "Which I know probably sounds insane, but it's hard to believe otherwise when my older sister was good friends with Witches for a good chunk of my growing up years."

I was babbling on without a point, and I knew it. I just couldn't seem to make myself stop for some reason. Which was sad, because for some reason I really wanted to make a good impression and not look like a complete freak. So far every single action pretty much completely contradicted that. Really hope one of these I'm gonna out grow that, but it doesn't seem likely.

"If I hadn't ran into you in the same section of the library, I'd probably be even more worried that you thought I was crazy, you know?" I laughed slightly, "But considering I not only found you here, but found you with a whole stack of books, I'd say you're more than a little interested yourself." I added with a slight smirk.

"Likewise," said Landon, sinking his hands deep into his pockets. "Witches? Your sister knows witches? Like real ones? I know a few fluffbunny Wiccans, but noone who takes it very seriously as a religion or a craft. They just think it would be cool to be able to light candles without matches and stuff like that."

He was, frankly, a little impressed. He didn't think that the books in these aisles had ever been touched by a girl before. Poor books. He glanced towards his own stack when she mentioned his own interest in the occult, and gave her something that might be interpereted at a sheepish smile. "Yeah, well... what can I say? It's interesting stuff. Definitely merits a little research, if nothing else. I mean, this kind of thing is going on all around us, all the time... I think so, anyway. Most people don't even notice it, but... you know, life? Not quite as mundane as most people like to think it is."

"Willow and Tara were real witches...well, Willow still is I guess..." I trailed off slightly, trying not to dwell on how out of control everything had gotten since Tara's death. Wasn't really a happy subject, and the last thing I wanted right now was for Landon to notice a change in my mood and start questioning it. How could I even begin to explain any of that to him? Not that it was even really an option.

"As far as life goes, you're right. You really are. Which is almost weird, because I almost never come across anyone that doesn't already have some sort of connection to my sister or her friends that believes that." I commented. "At times I don't really get how everyone can't see it. If they actually started thinking about some of the stuff they just shrug off as being exactly what the newspapers say it is, they'd probably die of shock." I paused, my eyes searching his for a moment. Checking to see if he thought I was a total head case, really. "So what got you interested in all this stuff anyway?" I asked curiously.

"So what got you interested in all this stuff anyway?"

Landon shrugged a little. "I guess I've just always found it really fascinating. That's what happens when you grow up on things like X-Men and Power Rangers and stuff. You look for weird things in life, and then... well, at first you're kind of surprised when you find them, but then they turn out to be pretty cool. Uh, some are a little more dangerous than others, but still, cool." He smiled again, reaching back to scratch at the nape of his neck. From what she'd told him, he was guessing that she wouldn't label him as a complete nut. She was a fellow believer, wasn't she?

"Also, I'm pretty sure I've got some kind of superpowers. I'm just, you know... working on building them up," he said with a slight sigh, almost a little sheepishly. "But on to more important things. Do you believe in vampires?" he asked her, his smile slowly becoming a small, challenging smirk.

I listened carefully to everything he was telling me...and when he got to the part where he thought he had powers? If I had been anyone but me, I probably would have thought he was insane, but for some reason I didn't find it so hard to believe. And if he thought he had powers of some kind, he must have a reason. I should ask him about that at some point.

"Do I believe in vampires?" I repeated back, "I don't know how much you know about the giant crater that used to be Sunnydale California, but let's just say living there for 7 years makes it really kind of hard not to unless I was completely oblivious to everything around me. That's all really kind of a long, complicated story, but yes, totally believe in them." I told him, my face straight the entire time, wondering what his reaction to that was going to be.

"That's all really kind of a long, complicated story, but yes, totally believe in them."

Landon was smiling again now, only mildly suprised by what he was feeling. "I had a sneaking suspicion you might. The whole witch thing was probably the best clue there, I guess. But hey -- nice to meet someone else who isn't totally blind. My best friend thinks I'm crazy. He's a total naysayer. Thinks I'm completely out of my skull, believing in everything I do, but I've just... you know. Seen too much not to believe. I'm getting the feeling that you know exactly what that's like."

Deciding that they'd been standing an awfully long time, Landon helped himself to a chair at the table they had been standing next to and gestured for Dawn to join him. "So tell me about this Sunnydale place. You said it's a crater now? I might have heard something about that on the news... I think they chalked it up to earthquakes or something." He was grinning now, his interest piqued. "What really happened?"

"Yeah, I get it. Don't worry." I said, sitting down at the table across from him, "As we've already established, my life isn't one that lends itself to pretending the things I see aren't real."

Why was I telling him all this stuff? It was crazy, and I knew it. But for some reason I felt like I could trust him. Which was possibly even crazier...considering I knew nothing of this guy other than he actually seemed to believe in everything I've dealt with every day since my sister became a slayer and I met him in the occult section. Why was I trusting him?

I could still tell him what happened to Sunnydale without giving him too many of the specifics, right? Yeah...that'll work.

"What really happened? Well, have you ever heard of the concept of a hellmouth? Because that's kind of key." I told him with a smile. Let's see how much he actually knew. And save me the hassle of explaining it if I don't have to.
