college stuff

I almost forgot!

on monday my mom and I went to two cheapie stores (one was kind of like a small version of goodwill and the other was a 99 cent place) and started getting stuff for college. well, we were only out for about two hours or so, and we didn't get much, but now I have two regular spoons, one long-handled spoon, two forks, two knives, two little plates, and one big plate; a mattress pad; a spatula, dish soap, band-aids, mechanical pencils, and a multi-pack of paper clips, clamps, rubber bands, and thumbtacks. the plates are the only dishware that match. the rest are individually lovely, although used.

also, my "required reading for college" came in the mail a few days ago! I am super-excited about these books, which will help fortify me against the slings and arrows that naturally bombard any college kid who claims a modicum of authentic faith. my mom ordered four of the books on my rather lengthy list from Ignatius Press, which is a Catholic publisher. I'm not going to read them until I move into my dorm, and they constitute one of the scant reasons why i look forward to moving in. they are:

_The Liturgy After Vatican II: Collapsing or Resurgent?_
I really look forward to this one because it's one of a very few amount of books that don't automatically prescribe the Tridentine Mass and a rejection of Vatican II as a way to "solve all our problems."
From the back, the author "presents another penetrating work on the present state of the Eucharistic Liturgy, the problems that still exist, and how to correct these abuses. ... Crouan [the author] says that the great majority of Catholics need and want, not celebrations that are 'creative', [sic] but a Eucharistic Liturgy that offers all the guarantees of Catholicity and leads them to an authentic contemplation of the mysteries being celebrated. He demonstrates the urgent need to examine liturgical practices in parish churches, and to clarify matters by acknowledging erroneous practices in order to establish a greater fidelity to the real teaching of Vatican II and the Roman Missal."

_Defenders of the Faith in Word and Deed_
Catholic heroes! WOOHOO! Just what I need for daily inspiration and strength in adversity.

_Brave New Family: G.K. Chesterton on Men & Women, Children, Sex, Divorce, Marriage & the Family_
This is a good one for combating the insidiously destructive mindsets about each of these topics that is promulgated by mainstream thought today, especially the liberal indoctrimation found on college campuses. That and I love G.K.C.

_Women in the Priesthood?: A Systematic Analysis in the Light of the Order of Creation and Redemption_
This book is about an inch and a half thick. I will savor every page. Then I will be fully equipped to legitimately snigger at those old women who playact at being "ordained" and "saying" Mass that have cropped up recently. Plus I can effectively argue against (probably) well-meaning but (definitely) seriously deluded people who think that women should be able to become priests.

oh dear, Richard... I hope you aren't against me reading these books. They sound *awfully* close-minded.
