this is just preposterous

I was reading posts on The Cafeteria is Closed blog and came across one that dealt with Sister Sandra Schneiders, who was recently honored by the Catholic Theological Society of America. she's a nutjob. here, read this:

"(W)e are not talking about how to organize the institution. We are talking about whether the god of Judeo-Christian revelation is true God or just men-writ-large to legitimate their domination; whether Jesus, an historical male, is or can be messiah and savior for those who are not male; whether what the church has called sacraments are really encounters with Christ or tools of male ritual abuse of women."
-- from her 1991 book, Beyond Patching: Faith and Feminism in the Catholic Church

Whether God is a true God or not... goodness me. how about you take a sabbatical from being Catholic while you figure out whether the Judeo-Christian faith is based on anything at all, or if you're just an athiest in theist clothing. cos if God isn't true... then NONE of the rest of it matters.

So Jesus came as a man. whatare you going to do about it, say, "Bad move, God-or-just-men-writ-large. You screwed up this time. You should be Mother Goddess with Jesia as a Divine Daughter and save all the women by non-violent means, like having marches and circulating petitions (rather like Martin Luther King - now he's a real savior, even if he was a man), and just let all the men go to hell, because of course they're too sinfult o be bothered with. with new cell manipulation technology we don't need men anyway." seriously, just because God decided to have XY chromosomes, you think it's some kind of male conspiracy to save men and not women? where did you get that insane conclusion? and people consider you a scholar? this is truly ridiculous.

As for the sacraments... PLEASE. the same sacraments are administered to males as females, so if they're "ritual abuse," WHY aren't the men complaining? and how exactly are the sacraments abuse? in Baptism, you get your forehead wet and you get two little rubs of oil in the sign of a cross on your forehead. OOOH OOOH OW OW OWOWOWWWWW!!!! STOP IT!! THAT HURTS! ...... well, I've read that it burns if you're a DEMON... and Communion? to a nonbeliever, we're just eating a tiny little bread wafer and getting a sip of wine. not exactly chinese water torture. Confession is just talking. if talking is now abuse for women, why the heck do we talk so much?? Confirmation... now there's a suspicious character, with all this talk about fire and stamping marks on the soul. oooooooooh I think I'm being abused. holy orders are just the root of all evil, 'nough said, except for MY holy orders, cos I'm SISTER Sandra Schnanablabla and therefore know more about the Catholic community of spiritual believers than you lowly laypeople or you habit-bound ignoramuses. and MARRIAGE!! AAAAAA! THERE IT IS! THE MALE RITUAL ABUSE OF WOMEN! SUBMISSION! OBEDIENCE! SLAVERY! WE'RE CHATTEL! HOUSEWIVES! WE'LL ALL BE PERPETUALLY BAREFOOT AND PREGNANT, STANDING IN THE KITCHEN SLAVING OVER A HOT STOVE! IT'S THE PATRIARCHAL CONSPIRACY TO KEEP WOMEN DOWN! I SEE IT NOW! IT ALL MAKES SENSE! PROMISING TO BE FAITHFUL IS SO CRUEL! LOVING EACH OTHER IS SUCH AGONY! AND IT TALKS ABOUT *DEATH*! OH, THE HORROR!

[aside: heeheeheeheehee! Richard will think I'm so close-minded.]

and another quote from her:

"For many the God of Christianity seems too small, too violent, and too male; the focus on Jesus Christ seems narrow and exclusive; the resurrection seems mythological if not incredible and, in any case, irrelevant to a world in anguish; the institutional church seems hopelessly medieval, sexist, and clerical; liturgy is alienating; morality is out of touch with reality; and church ministry is a continual battle with male hostility and power dynamics."
-from her 1997 address to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious

all I can say is... For many authentic Catholics, the spirituality of feminism is too broad, too wimpy, and too female. The focus on Eastern religions and Protestantism seems heretical and New Age-y; the labyrinths and Sophia seem mythological if not incredible and, in any case, irrelevant to a world of normal people. If the Catholic Church seems medieval, it's because our architecture rocks. The feminist institution is sexist against men and clerical in its veneration of women priestesses. Modern liturgy is alienating and revolting. Feminist morality is out of touch with reality as described in Humanae Vitae; and church ministry that has to deal with people like you is a continual battle with feminist hostility and power dynamics.

So go take a hike, lady. Preferably into the nearest Episcopal church. For where your treasure is, there also your heart lies.
