Music that sticks

Whenever I go on long trips and during the last few years I always have my Shuffle with me, and and about 85% of the time I only listen to albums, never really individual songs. What happens is, I end up associating that music with that specific point in time and those specific trips that I took. These are just a few of the associations I still have with me.

Arcade Fire - Funeral
First semester of college and basically all of winter 2004, as a result I associate it heavily with wintertime.

Ys - Joanna Newsom
First time I came to Montreal and the bus ride up.

On Avery Island - NMH
The last trip I took, in February, down to Burlington. This one was particularly special. This trip ended up being extremely significant for me. I was seeing Gabe and Alex play there as part of their tour. But my little brother and sister were going to be in town as well, and one of my best friends lives there as well. Every single one of those people have a hugely significant meaning in my life, and it all ended up affecting me in a very big way. Between the incredible music, the friends that mean so much to me, and the family I love and some of what they were going through at the time, it was just one day where everything collided at the same time and I felt like I was washed over in this great wave of emotion.

SoI can listen to these albums and I can take them in exactly as they are, but they also recall these other times that I've had. Its funny, I don't really listen to them much these days, except for the last one, but then again it was recent.

Oddly though a lot of my top albums don't really have a clear association. The Ramones, In the Aeroplane, Live at the Harlem Square Club, Smile. I can't really put them on any specific time.
