Chapter 41
After quite some time of awesome skating performances on the various new ramps, boxes and halfpipes in the skatepark, the heap of exhausted skaters met at the bar again to appease their thirst.
Bam stood with Hawk and Maldonado, since his lifepartner had caught on a chick in the meantime and was thus lost, watching the local skaters skate. One guy especially caught their eye. He was performing really hard tricks on the halfpipe, some of which Bam could only dream of at the moment - he wasn’t back full strength yet, and had never been the best vert skater anyway. “Dude, he skates like mad!” he admitted enthusiastically, and Hawk added “That dude could almost have a pro deck going on! What’s his name?”
“Haven’t got the slightest clue.”
“So he ain’t local?”
“He might be, I’ve not gotten into the scene at this park yet. To be honest I didn’t think there were skaters this good here. Hold on!” He took a look around to search for Chad. If anyone knew, he’d probably the one. He spotted him having a conversation near the halfpipe, and waved for him to come over.
“Chad! - Hawk, Mike, that’s Chad, he’s managing the park. - Chad, we were just wondering who that dude skating the pipe is? He’s freakin good. Do you know him?”
Chad nodded. “That’s Mike. Mike Baker.”
Bam thought he had heard the name before, but it took him some seconds to put his finger on the matter. Then he remembered the story this kid Todd had told him about how his friends were all quitting skating and how only he and Mike Baker were left, though Mike had recently gotten into selling drugs to pay the admissions at Boarderline and FDR.
“No way!” he gasped, more to himself than to anybody else, but Chad heard it.
“You know him?” the older man asked and Bam told him quickly.
“Yeah, that’s a rather sad story.” Chad agreed, “I hope he doesn’t do drugs himself. I wouldn’t want to lose him, he’s been skating here since forever. Haven’t seen a happier person tonight, though. He can’t believe he’s got this nice park right outside his crib now.”
“Could you give me his address?” Hawk asked Chad.
“I’m afraid I don’t have the exact one. But Mike will surely be happy to give it to you. I mean, it’d totally make his day if he knew *Tony Hawk* wants it!”
Hawk smiled. “Sounds like I got someone to talk to then. See you guys later!” He strode away towards the ramp, leaving Bam and Maldonado to themselves and some smalltalk.
“I’m going to get us another beer.”, Maldonado said and, as Bam nodded, turned around to the waitress.
Bam let the view of *his* skatepark appeal to himself. It was truly impressive, and he was glad to see that the evening turned out so great. Now it was only less than an hour to go until the music performances would begin, CKY first and then, later, HIM. His favorite band, doing their first gig after Ville Valo’s recovery. It couldn’t get any better. Bam had picked them up at the airport earlier, and knew that they would be back full force. A US tour was soon to follow this show, and there would definitely be no more embarrassing playback performances and alike. Thank god Bam had made that last phonecall to Finland, carefully asking if Ville’d be ready and willing to play. The answer had been more than positive; in fact Ville was eager to sing live again and get out of the clinic.
“There you are, my dear Bam.” a deep voice suddenly jolted him out of his daydreams.
“Willa! Sneaking up on me again?”
“Oh no, I could never do that.” the singer replied with a devilish grin, “I just thought it’d talk to you before we go on stage, because this is your concert. And actually I was hoping to find a beer, too.”
He lit his cigarette. “So… have you made up your mind about which songs you want us to play yet?”
“Oh, err…” Bam ran a hand through his hair, “Are you going to play whatever I want?”
“Since it your party, I guess yes.”
Bam grinned. “In that case… I think I known the perfect song for YOU to make a comeback with on MY concert.”
“And that is?”
“Death is in love with us.”
Ville turned around on his heels, a rather frightened expression on his face. He swallowed. “Do you really think that’s a good idea?”
“No.”, Bam laughed, “Just kiddin’ Willa.”
“You … you … oh well!” the singer sighed, “Any serious wishes?”
Bam nodded. “Yeah. You should save your new songs for the actual tour, so why not do some cover songs tonight?”
“Were you thinking about Rebell Yell, then?” Ville asked and took another drag from his cigarette.
“Yeah, that and …” Bam started laughing again, causing the Finn to raise his eyebrows in worry once more.
“You promised you were going to perform anything I want… well, I want ‘Escape from Hellview’ by CKY, but Jess says they’re not going to play it tonight. So why don’t you?”
Ville seemed to start choking from his own smoke for an instant, then started coughing. “Bam! We can’t do that!”
“I think it’ll be fun.”
“And I think Deron is going to kill me for it!”
Bam laughed. “I’ll make sure he doesn’t.”
“You better do, because I don’t feel like dying at all.”
“That’s good to hear.”
“Ba-am…” the singer rolled his eyes. Attempting to kill yourself in front of a comedian like Bam Margera obviously resulted in constant mocking once both of you had gotten better.
“Is that a yes then?” Bam asked instead and looked up. Ville gave him a precarious look, but remained silent.
“… Please Willa! You promised.”
The singer shook his head in played desperation. “You should not always take me so very serious!”
“I’ll remember next time. But for tonight … I want HIM to play Escape from Hellview.”
Ville sighed and saluted. “Always at your command, Sir!”
“Shut up!” Bam chuckled and took a long sip from the beer Maldonado finally handed him.
Tonight’s performances were sure to be … interesting.
Chapter 42
Not only were they interesting, but the performances also rocked the park. Each band’s fanbase was present, with some people even likening both bands. Not to forget the numerous skaters that were simply enjoying it as background music for their tricks.
CKY had come up with a damn good show, like always, with Chad catching almost too much air, Jess breaking his sticks from drumming so hard and a headbanging moshpit at their feet. It culminated with a mindblowing version of the infamous “96 Quite Bitter Beings”, but now Deron, Chad and Jess had left the stage to continue the evening with more drinking, giving way for HIM.
And although most stayed, some of the fans were starting to make their way out of the crowd whilst Valo, Linde, Migé and Gas performed “Rebel Yell”. It was when the leadsinger cleared his throat and announced the next song that they stopped and turned around.
“Alright my friends,” Ville said, his voice reverberating from the speakers. The spotlight caught him in the cone of light. “At the risk of being punished for it by the original band; on desperate request of our savior Bam Margera … here’s a cover of CKY’s ‘Escape from Hellview’!”
“What the fuck?!” Jess turned to his brother with a ferocious look on his face, but Bam just laughed at him.
“You refused to play Hellview! But Valo was generous enough.”
“No way! That’ll be hilarious!” Jess’ expression soon turned to amused. “I can’t believe he’s really doing that! I mean, for you. 3 months ago he was a mental wreck!”
“And I was the physical equivalent.” Bam said, turning serious for a split second. But he laughed again right away. “Whatever dude! That’s the past, but I wanna enjoy the moment. Dunno what you’re doing but I’m going to rock out so hard to HIM playing …”
He trailed off and climbed up the rail of the elevated bar, to obviously branch right into the mass and go crowdsurfing.
“You’re insane.”
“I know!” Bam said and with that, jumped down.
Jess smiled. He couldn’t give a fuck who or what played his band’s music when only his brother stopped being a depressive asshole, but went back to craziness and carelessness. After all, those were the features that had always outlined his life.

Later that night, they all gathered around a large table Bam had set up near the bar, to finally settle the night with drinking.
“So Hawk,” Bam asked after he took a long swig of beer, “What’s up with the kid you talked to earlier?”
“Got his address, and, well, I’ll make sure some scouts come ‘round sometime and get him sponsored. He definitely deserves it.”, the older man replied.
“Sounds like I’m not gonna be the only pro skater in this park, then.” Bam nodded but Novak immediately punched him in the site.
“What about me, fucker?”
“You’re so not pro. You don’t have a sponsor.”
“I thought you were my sponsor.”
“True.” Bam snorted. “What are you doing here anyway? Where did your chick go?”
“Dude that’s my *girlfriend*.”
“You don’t have a girlfriend.”
Novak burst out in laughter, but Bam just frowned until his lifepartner picked up the phrase he’d used earlier and said:
”I thought you were my girlfriend, Bammie”
Whoever had heard it started laughing wildly.
“What’s funny?” Ryan, who hadn’t listened once again, asked, but only increased the laughter with his bafflement.
“Nuttin’”, Bam laughed and slipped an arm around Jenn, “Sorry Novak, but I don’t think I’d be a good girlfriend.”
The other skater faked a pout and replied in a girly voice: “We’ll see, we’ll see. What are our plans for next week, sweetheart?”
Amidst laughter, Bam pointed towards the Finns and said: “We’re going to see some more of their concerts.”
“You’re touring again, Valo?” Ryan, who finally wanted to grasp the conversation, asked and the singer nodded.
“Yeah, we still have to make good for the last one.”
“That’s cool. Glad everything turned out so well.”
“Ryan.” Bam glanced up at him. “I second that. It couldn’t get any better for any of us, right now. All we can do is thank each other, I guess.”
As the rest nodded in agreement, Ville stood up saluted in a played bow, then raised his bottle of beer to propose a toast. Everybody followed suit and stood up as well.
The singer took a look around and smiled happily when bottles clinked. Pleased, he let his own strike Bam’s and called out:
“To life, our most precious possession!!”
