Day 3: Down in Dixie (7/23)

Jul 23, 2021 22:48

LAWRENCEVILLE GA - After a quick glance of the Olympics’ opening ceremony on TV, we headed for brunch across town at the Another Broken Egg Café. Can’t complain about the omelets here.

In getting to the Atlanta metro area, we had to backtrack a bit toward Chattanooga before heading east across the mountains. (Well, it’s Alabama, so “mountains.”)

After a post-lunch break at The Varsity for milkshakes, we bunked down at our hotel in the eastern suburb of Sewanee. (Not the best-designed place, as I have to creep the car up a ramp to pull onto a crowded main road.)

The game for the night involved the Gwinnett Stripers, the final rung before the Atlanta Braves. It was Wizards and Witches Night, with the mascot (Chopper the Groundhog- not a Striper) dressed as Harry Potter, and the ladies of Hocus Pocus singing the national anthem.

The magic flowed both ways for the offense; Gwinnett scored eight in the bottom of the fifth, only for Norfolk to score seven in the top of the sixth. Fortunately, the Stripers already had a nine-run head start, so they won going away, 17-8.
